Saying Hi

Hi

My name is Emily. I have been a diabetic (Type 1) since I was 18 months old. I am now 22. My sister and mum are all diabetic too - all type one.

Having grown up with a diabetic mum - my view on diabetes seems to be very very different to the way that most of you seem to deal with your diabetes. I was never bought up thinking that 'sweet things' were not allowed and have never to my knowledge have I consumed any 'diabetic products' as my mum thinks they are unhealthy. I was always allowed to have a biscuit (obviously within reason - not if my BG was sky high) or a treat. My mum never came to my school when I was younger to check up on me or to make sure I was eating correctly - If I didn't eat then I had to deal with the consequences. I think this upbringing has left me a little confused - as a family we don't count carbs or adjust insulin doses accordingly.

I do now obviously - it helps me control my rather erratic diabetes. Despite being on a very strict diet and very very low insulin dose (12 units of Lantus am and 1 dose of Novorapid per 25g of food) I have incredibly bad hypos. They happen with no warning and I can go from being 8/9 on my BG to 1.2 in a matter of 10 minutes (with no insulin injected). This happens on a fairly frequent basis and I have video evidence of me testing and then 12 minutes later being on the floor. My hypos are very very severe and 9 times out of ten I will have to have glugacon. These hypos have happened whilst in hospital, at home, at work. They appear without warning - this has confused Drs, Consultants and Diabetic Nurses. I am currently on the waiting list for an insulin pump - although this could take a while.
If anyone has any suggestions about what I can do - they would really help!

Hi Emily.
Welcome to the forum. Have a good look around especially the Type 1 forum area. Can you tell us what your 'very strict diet' actually consists of ?

As for the problem you have with hypo's if it has the Dr's, Nurses and Consultant's confused. Then I think I am in good company...... :? My normal response would be too much Insulin, not enough food, unusual amount of exercise, delayed meal, stress etc. In your case that doesn't seem to apply and there may be something else going on.

Hopefully there will be a Type 1 along soon who may have experienced the same and can advise you better.
