...I've not used margarine for years, have tried all sorts of spreads, don't much like the taste...my DN recommended Benecol as I will no longer use statins due to side effects and its meant to lower cholesterol..she said its not a con [the jury's out at the moment, not had it for long enough!].....its expensive, almost £4 for a 500g pk....found some in our local 99p shop but only had one month's' sellby date...looked on their website and found the 'buttery' type which I bought is freezable so bought a couple, one to use one to freeze, seems okay to me so far....other than that I use Lurpak spreadable..

SJC, keep on eating the chicken curry...:D

I keep seeing people on here commenting on this Benecol. My favourite butter is Lurpak :)
 
NOOOOO. Best butters are yeo valley organic, salted, and a Yorkshire one in a black wrapper you get from Tesco, bootiful, just miss the toast to put it on. :( xx

Butter without toast or a baked potato is a travesty! :(
 
Surely. But I am going to introduce potatoes back into my diet. I've cut out bread, rice and pasta, I missed a baked potato a couple of times a week, so it's back on the menu now. You've just pointed out I can have a good dollop of butter on it too. WWWoooHHOOO, thanks for reminding me SJC!! XX

...I'm lucky I can eat rice with no spike whatsoever but not the other two you mention...its all such a minefield and soo individual...thats why we all need meters, when will the professionals realise we don't just WANT them, we NEED them...:eek:
 
I won't be testing after a baked potato Pollycocks, I don't give 2 hooks what my level is after it. There is a limit to my deprivation tolerance. xx

I shall try some next week. I do find brown rice rather chewy though! :)
 
Really nice post to the newly diagnosed well done, the eating part is such a minefield! But this directs to the info we all eventually realise :)
I would definitely recommend getting your head round myfitnesspal, u don't have to stick to what it recommends but is easy way to track carbs and percentages of food in diet. Good comprehensive list of foods.
A pedometer, whether cheap job or a fancy fitbit (addicted to mine!) Is a really good way of starting to improve your fitness by walking a little more each day, I found it better in the long term than promising I will do long slogs at the gym only to get fed up after a few weeks! I set myself weekly challenges to just go a bit further than last week. A great starting point if u haven't been very active for whatever reason.
My area also has 'health' walks run by the local council and volunteers with different walks somewhere every day of the week, u can take the dog/wheelchairs/buggys.
If you feel more adventurous, the nhs 'couch25k' program is good fun, gets you running with podcasts over 9 weeks, I completed it last year and surprised myself how much I enjoyed it (hated running at school!)
If you have mobility problems, some nhs trusts run subsidized chair exercise sessions.
So there's plenty of 'cheap' options to get moving.
I think I read u should exercise about 40-60mins after eating, and check your levels to see what effect u get. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Just my tuppence worth :)
