Hi just been diagnosed type two I’m a very anxious person and am due for my eye test and I’m petrified I’m going to be told I’ll go blind in m 62 years old

I understand about being scared when first diagnosed, but please know that as a T2 you can get control of your diabetes. Some of us even get into remission and maintain that for yours, avoiding diabetic complications.

There is plenty of help here, whatever path you choose. There is information below to help get you started.

Welcome to the forum @Chas989

First of all take a deep breath and relax being diagnosed can be very scary and overwhelming but your in the right place for lots of support and advice

It completely normal to be offered eye checks and foot checks - you should get these on a yearly basis as well as blood tests, they are nothing to worry about and help keep well.

Try not to worry about things too much as stress can affect your blood sugars too,

There are links in my signature to lots of helpful info and advice for newbies, have a read of those and a browse round the forum you will see there are a lot of us who successfully control our T2. Take your time and don’t overwhelm yourself, it’s a marathon not a sprint

Thank you all I had a very bad experience when I was 13 years old and anything medical I always think the worse
https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html might help some with getting your blood sugars under control, and getting a grip on this whole T2 thing, what it is, and what it isn't. (It isn't, for example, as bad as you think it might be. You're going to be okay!!!!). As for your eyes, an eye-check is usual, and no need to be alarmned just yet. Also.... If you're starting treatment of your diabetes, be it through medication or diet, your blood glucose will go down... And with it, your vision can change for a bit. The sugar in your eyes distorted your vision, and your brain compensated for that for a while... It'll have to unlearn to do that, which can take a week or two. Do NOT get new specs, unless it's the cheap reading kind, because it won't last for long and you don't want to spend a couple of hundred pounds on glasses you won't be able to use by the time they come in. (Which is what happened to me, haha).

Honest, you're going to be fine, you're not going blind any time soon, but your eyes'll probably go wonky for a bit, and then straighten themselves out. So... No need to panic. And if you have any questions, we've got you.
Hugs,
Jo

Hi Chas and welcome. I was diagnosed at 62 as well, in 2019. The good news is that the diabetes horror stories you hear don't have to happen - there is a lot you can do to control your condition, avoid symptoms, and even achieve and maintain normal blood glucose levels. So the first thing is not to panic.

I would advise involving your other half in all of this. If you're going to make lifestyle changes it really helps to have a supportive partner. You may want to change eating patterns and habits, and doing it together really helps.

I would also advise trying to forget everything you think you know about what "healthy eating" is. What I eat is definitely not the officially advised diet, but that diet led me to diabetes.

Based on my direct experience I would strongly recommend a low-carb diet to control and lower your blood glucose. This means avoiding not only sugar but also the starches - carbohydrates that turn to glucose once digested. This isn't anything new: it was standard dietary advice up to about the 1980s, when the "eat lots of carbohydrates" advice was imposed, which has been followed by a rise in T2 diabetes and obesity.

There is lots of good advice on this forum. Have a read around, and ask questions. We've all been where you are now.

I’m so impressed with the positive response I’m getting from you and everyone else I’m trying stay positive and this is all helping
It’s all so contradictory with regards to what is good and what is bad but with the groups help I’m confident I’ll get there
Thank you so much

As you learn more about diabetes, and believe me you WILL. You will come to understand that the established nutritional advice is rubbish. It's not healthy for anyone, but those without sugar disregulation, like us, can just about cope, until eventually they can't. This is why obesity and diabetes have been rising meteorically for some time. Now they're even adding vegetables in pet food, and the same thing is happening to cats and dogs. It's not natural for them.
With low carb, in a couple of months time you'll be the healthiest you've been for years.

Thank you so much for the mental lift this has given me

Thank you so much Jo that’s really reassuring
I want to talk to my wife about my fears but I don’t want to worry her
You're going to be okay... Once you actually start believing that, it'll hopefully be easier to share this journey with her. It's easier to do all this when you're in it together.

It's quite possible your wife knows something is up, and maybe her imagination is running away with her? Tell her your diagnosis, but also tell her you have a lot of information about how to live well with it. As you probably need to modify your diet, doing that without her noticing is rather unlikely!

Yes that’s true i will tell her thank you
It’s very daunting but this group is giving me so much support
