Hello everyone,
I hope by posting this question someone can give me reasurance.
I have had type 1 diabeties for 27 years and for the majority of thoses years I have eaten what I wanted, haphazzardly injucted insulin and just not given a hoot.
Now I am scared, my vision is deteriorating, i get blured vision and floaters, i have had lazer surgery in the past and am due to see my diabetic eye consultatnt in December.
The doctor at my diabetic hospital has refused to see me as I have cancelled so many appointments this year, I am left with care from my local doctor which isn't much.
I am scared of going blind, I am scared of always being overweight and I am scared of never being able to control my diabeties. I read that a type one diabetic has twenty years less life span than the average person, so I could be dead in 10 - 15 years - I am 43.
Please help me as this is really affectling my life and i do not know where to begin.

scary stuff. You must be feeling horrible right now but... sounds as if you have decided to turn things around?
reassurance... well, you have a whole forum here of people who would gladly help you if we can. Are you looking for help in terms of how to get control back, or how to approach your consultant to get your specialist care back, or maybe you just need to share how scared you are?

I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your eyesight. It's very scary to be suddenly aware of problems that didn't seem possible when you were first diagnosed. I assume you were in your 20's? When I was in my 20's I couldn't imagine being the age I am now, never mind having to manage a serious and long-term health problem like T1. (I am T2, newly diagnosed) So I think you need to acknowledge that you are now ready to be actively involved in managing your diabetes differently from now on. Anyway, well done for doing that, it takes some doing >HUG<. I guess you will have to convince the hospital that you have made a committment to working with them, so is there a diabetic nurse speciallist at your GP's? If not, what about booking in to see someone at the hospital team. Is there someone who you feel more comfortable with, or who may be sympathetic? I guess a starting point with them could be acknowledging that you have not been committed to treatment, but now you feel ready. Discussing what goals you want to achieve with their help could also show them you are now ready to work. Also, although it's very scary, maybe you can use this fright to help you stay motivated and committed. :) Good luck :)
 
I was 15 when I was diagnosed and I feel as though I am drained of it all now.
Unfortunately there is no diabetic specialist nurse at the GP surgery, and the ones who work at the diabetic clinic are linked to the consultant who refuses to see me.

I dont know what to do now x
 
I'm not surprised you feel fed up with it all. Have the hospital nurses refused to see you as well? How do you get on with your GP? You could try writing a letter to the consultant telling him how you feel scared disheartened and overwhelmed by having T1 for so long. You could also apologise to him for missing your appointments and say you realise these are precious resourses, and you now realise that you need to accept help with managing your diabetes. Show willing by recording what you eat, when you eat what dose insulin you take and when, and your blood glucose levels. (there are some downloads on this site) Ask if you can have a place in the T1 education programme (and turn up) :) As Snodger said, there are a lot of people here who can help and support you. Please don't give up!
