Dear NicolaAnne,
So sorry to hear that you have sciatica. It is really annoying and painful. They (doctors and nurses) do not seem to have much sympathy for sufferers, and usually start you on an exercise regime, before the inevitable painkillers. The worst thing is that no one else can see or understand the pain, and it's debilitating effect, so you do not get much sympathy. Unless you have surgery, it probably will not get any better (although you have good and bad days).
Not much help I am afraid, although, like diabetes, there are lots of others who feel like you do and sympathise,

Hi,

I can fully understand what you are going through. I had sciatica caused by a prolapsed lumber disc so badly that I would lie in bed at night screaming at my hubby to cut my leg off. Mine was so bad and long lasting that I was eventually given surgery to remove the lumber disc. When they opened me up they found the disc had ruptured and bits of it were clinging to the sciatic nerve. Before the surgery I was given extensive physio, epidural steroid injections, X-Rays and goodness knows what else. I was told it was caused by poor posture. Even things like an unsuitable car seat can cause it, and of course all the usual culprits like not sitting up straight at a desk or dining table, or indeed sitting badly anywhere. After surgery I have had no problems whatsoever, and that was nearly 30 yeas ago. The best exercise is swimming.

I hope you manage to sort it out one way or another as it is very crippling and won't get better on its own.

I hate this so much its like everything is going wrong! I just want to be pain free I guess there are some days when the pain isnt so bad but 98% it is bad. I even struggle to take my right shoe off because I cant get my leg up without it hurting! Deep heat works sometimes and naproxen worked for about a week, now I have a aching calf muscle and I am so fed up! :( And I would go swimming but I am not a very strong swimmer and struggle to breath/have panic attacks when in the water. Cant win really :(

Do be careful if you go swimming, my wife had to be hoisted out with the disabled hoist after her sciatica kicked in when swimming. She will lay on her tummy with shoulders on a pillow to help relieve the pain. Also movement can help, pulling her knee up to her chest gives a little relief some times.
It's a nasty pain that is overwhelming some times .. She refused an op some years ago.

Hi Nicola,

I would think that the sciatica is connected to the scoliosis and until someone sorts this out then you will experience pain. Your posture is probably causing the sciatica pain. Have you been told not to wear high heels and not to sleep on a soft mattress?
Can you phone the Dr. and explain the pain you are going through and ask that he contact the Consultant to bring your appointment forward?

This article explains some of the symptoms you are experiencing.

That is what I thought and no I havent been told that but i do not wear high heels anyway as I am 5ft10! haha but erm I have seen the consultant's colleague who was a physio and he has just sent for an MRI so I guess I just have to wait for that and see what happens? and in the mean time just have to suffer I guess.
