Hi, I did a post a few months back about Sciatica, I have been to my doctor's twice now and he just keeps telling me to take naproxen which only worked for about a week and now I am just in so much pain and have now got a limp whenever I walk. I also cannot take naproxen anymore as I am now on Citalopram, an antidepressant! Can anyone give me any advice please?

Hi NicolaAnne

Sounds like your blood sugars have soared...? This is your body telling you about the inflammation that's going on. I'm not an expert on drugs but most of these are aimed to block the pain rather than to solve the underlying problem.

Do you experience burning, pins and needles, numbness...do you have lower back pain? Do you practice good posture? Can you do some simple, gentle stretching exercises? If this has been ongoing, then perhaps you should look into the Alexander Technique.

Sciatica is bad enough but if you are limping, this is even more serious as it may lead to other, secondary problems. And you don't want to be burdened with all of this as a young lady!

Hi there
Sad to hear of your problem - it is dreadful pain. Why not ask your GP for referral to a pain clinic at your local hospital ? They have many other drugs (better drugs) and help available,

Hallo NicolaAnne,

Sciatica is terrible and strange pain!
Had it as a teenager and did 'A' levels standing up in Biology Lab, because sitting for too long caused me to faint with the pain.

At 50 had an operation as pain unbearable. Now lots more problems with back (at 61) as lost much sensation in one foot and leg, finding going upstairs hard as is walking on uneven ground. Very worried about future mobility. Limping quite badly.

there are things you can do -exercises, etc, but first you must get properly diagnosed. It does sound like sciatica, but it's vitally important to have scans/x-rays to ensure it's discs causing problems with the nerve.

Once it's diagnosed you can look at ways of improving things and learning to relax a bit.

Let us know how you go on, but I really emphasise you need to get this diagnosed. I live in France where tests are prescribed quickly.

Jane.

I'm sorry that it may not help you now but, in the hope that it could assist others, and you in the future, I was a martyr to sciatica 2-3 times per year until I discovered that by taking Ibuprofen for 2 days immediately I felt the sciatica coming on, I could avoid the weeks of misery that would otherwise follow.

My GP suggested that reducing inflammation in that initial period was stopping much of the pressure on the nerve that then damages it and causes the pain.

I hope it eases for you soon. It's a pitiless and miserable condition.

Thank you for all the feedback, yes i do have slight lower back pain but it isnt constant whereas the pain in my leg is and i sometimes get pins and needles. Its so frustrating im 19 but feel like im 90 and i feel asif my doctor wont listen to what im saying! :(
