SCREAMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

Your A1c is probably falsely low because like me you suffer Reactive Hypoglycemia, where the highs are brief and only glycate the blood reversibly, and you have lows where the blood is glycated even less than a normal person.

Definitely go for the private appointment, it will be interesting to see if they have a better diet plan than the typical NHS "Eat More Starch!"

IMO cutting fats in not a good plan, they help slow down the conversion of carbs to glucose and especially with RH their absence will tend to make you spike and drop more rapidly.

This is one condition where the GI of carbs as well as their quantity needs looking at, go for small quantities of relatively low GI carbs and several small meals/snacks rather than a few big ones, at first at least.

Glad to hear that you have sorted out a private GP, I am sure he will be more helpful than your own GP.

I guess you will take a list of all your test levels with you to the appointment, right?

They do look a little high but I'm sure with the right diet and medication you will soon see an improvement.

You sound like you've had a tough time of it. But tomorrows another day.
I hope things get better for you.

Regards

Kim

Yes I am going to take my levels, I've just put them all properly into an excel sheet (I love excel) and they range from a 12.6 to a 3.2. There is no real pattern to them they just seem to be high then dip, with similar foods and circumstances. Although I can see when I am stressed they go very high. Just looked up Reactive Hypoglycemia and it rang bells, so very interesting. Gosh its been a tough day but feel like I have learnt a lot and turned the corner. I feel the lurrrve..but seriously thank you again, I'm really starting to feel I can be positive about all this.

hi iolanthe and persist till you get the help you need. i thought every surgery was like mine. i was sent on a desmond course (diabetes education and self management) and my diabetic nurse sees me regularly. i had a problem with pain and exercise and thought it might be the statins(for high cholestoral). the receptionst said a nurse would phone me but the diabetic specialist doctor did. he is great! i am type 2 and on diet only. i was going to the pool anyway as i had a hip replacement last year, so i swim and go to aqua aerobics. i have a small heart blockage and my mum died of heart trouble at 59 so i am on a low fat low sugar and low salt diet. i nearly cried when you said you only ate 700cals. i have porridge for breakfast, an apple after swimming, ryvita or wholemeal bread with lean ham and salad and maybe some strawberries for lunch and a healthy evening meal ie few boiled spuds chicken lots of steamed veg and some yogurt or fruit. so far (since christmas) i have lost 19 lbs and blood glucose readings are between 4.5 and 8.5. need to loose another stone so will maybe cut down a bit. seeing my nurse next week. (and i get test strips!!)love, maisies granny - a 62 year old funky artist who misses milk chocolate!http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-forum/posting.php?mode=reply&f=1&t=8328#

I think you have a right to your HbA1c numbers. If it's between 4.5% and 5.6% its non-diabetic. Below 6.0% is GOOD If it's over 7% it's in the danger zone. In between is in between.
