SD Codefree meter

I was really excited when I found about the SD Codefree glucometer and that test strips were only £4.99 for 50 on ebay. But reading on here some people say that its unreliable. Is this true? How unreliable is it? I'm not working so can't really afford to buy the normal test strips for my accuchek metre. It costs £28 for 50 where as these are really cheap.

I think a lot of people on the forum have bought one and generally the meter has had a favourable response. There may be an issue with some of the strips rather than the meter itself as some members have found the occasional strip produces obviously wrong results. The manufacturer is apparently aware of this problem. Like you say the strips are only £4.99 for 50 and do represent good value for money.

All meters are unreliable, but they are the only tools that we have. My Contour USB meter sometimes throws a wobbly, as did my Accucheck Mobile before it. Part of learning about how your BG reacts to food is learning to spot when your meter is giving a wrong meter and retesting. That happens with all meters. The good news is that the cost of retesting with the SD Code Free is a lot less than with other meters.

Anyone who says that one meter is somehow superior to another based on comparing readings from two meters is talking rubbish.

Buy the meter, test your blood, kick your diabetes up the bum.

I have an SD codefree meter, and it does me just fine. It has a diary so you can see back readings and I don't even use that. I just want a meter that I can eat too, and check how I am doing. It's small, compact has a little case and a BG diary book, suits me down to the ground. I pay £6.99 for 50 strips from Amazon with free P&P.

I have this meter and it is fine. No anomalies so far. And I can afford to test as often as I need to.

I have one of these, and have only had one result that made me re-test, and I think that was my fault - not drying my hands properly and so testing a diluted sample!

The only concern I have is that the strips only seem to be stocked by one company, and so if they stop stocking them we'll all be left with useless meters!

Good point! Might be worth stock-piling whilst they're £4.99 per 50 and still available
The ones I'm using now have an expiry date of october 2013 so no problem with doing that if you can afford to! :thumbup:
 
Mine has staopped working after 8 strips.

Hopefully they will swop it for another.

Makes me a bit suspicious regarding reliability, I have had a few other meters and never had one break.

I will wait and see how the replacement goes.

Mine is going strong after 4 weeks of testing 6 times a day. No problems, and no dodgy results.

The lancet thingy is a bit flimsy and temperamental, but it works.

I had to return a Freestyle Lite meter a few months ago as it used 2 new batteries in 2 months!! (The second battery only did about 2 tests!!) When I phoned Abbott they said there was a fault with some of them draining batteries and they sent a new one out that day to replace it FOC. So they can all have their faults.

I have an SD meter as a spare and find it just fine. Gives me the chance to test as much as I like without using lots of my (very lucky to get) prescribed strips. Especially since I went to the Doctor on Friday as my levels are steadily rising despite low carbs and he said I was testing too much and 3 times a week is fine and he is happy as long as the numbers stay in single figures!! I said I feel tired, lazy and get tingling in my feet when I get up and my levels are already 8.5 or so (used to run in the 5's) and my pre-meal readings are already 7+ and he said "Really?" and sounded amazed I could tell the difference!! :shock:
Just glad the Nurse I usually see is a bit more switched on

I have never had a problem with the lancet pen either. My little cheap meter is just fine.
 
The display on mine started fading and intermittently cutting out today almost like the battery is failing already and I've had it since february so I may have been unlucky but will contact homehealthcare to see what they say...
 
That's about how many mine did-My other meter did 3 times that amount and was still going strong.
 
Mine has whooped both of yours then, I am now into the 400 and the battery is still going strong.
 
No meter is 'unreliable', but some are better than others.The SD Code-free will still give you an accurate reading, but it may not be as reliable over the long-term as others. If you took two different meters and tested your blood, one might say 5.7 and the other might say 6.4, but they are still both in 'The Range'.
