seperate type 1 and type 2 areas?

Does anyone think that the forum could do with seperate areas for type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It sometimes gets confusing not knowing wether you are communicating with a t1 or t2. After all the two are very different conditions indeed and I think a line should be drawn.

This has been discussed before.Yes they are separate types but there are for instance a few type 2's on insulin so where would they fit in? Perhaps the best idea was for members,if they want,to put their type in their signature line .At the end of the day we are all diabetics with the common aim of controlling this condition and helping one another whether type one or two or somewhere in between.

i havnt seen many, with there type on there signatures Sue , I too, get confused , plus its time consuming, you would need to scroll, through to check which is which, is there any reason why, we cant have a seperate one for the type 2,s on insulin , too , maybe someone, with type 2,s on insulin, will come on and let us know what they think

When I joined this forum ,I thought the same Jeannie but the more I post the more i realise that we are all in this together.Would that then mean that I could not talk to Fergus because he is type one?Or some of the other type ones.I have answered posts today for both type one and two, granted I don't have all the answers for all these problems but I can add a bit of help and encouragement to those that need it,and because we are all mixed through I pick up more info on different types of diabetes instead of just type two.I'm sure if you asked Dan the admin he may make a decision on that one way or another.

SUE , WE CAN STILL BE THERE , FOR EACH OTHER , CANT WE , ANYONE WHO NEEDS SOME SUPPORT , WE WOULD BE THERE TO SUPPORT , WHERE WE COULD AS YOU DO NOW,...... I SAY,..... "WE,".... I KNOW,..... AND I,M SO NEW TO FORUM,......I DONT KNOW ENOUGH TO COMMENT, .... AS YET,..... BUT HOPEFULLY...... ONE DAY..... I CAN GIVE SOMETHING BACK

I'm new to the board and have been trawling through the archives and found many interesting posts by Type 2s that are relevant to me on topics as varied as neuropathy, diet, exercise etc. If I'd only scrolled through messages by Type 1s, I wouldn't have learnt as much as I have in the past week.

I'd vote to keep a mixed board. :D

I think when you register you should have to select t1 or t2 and this is reflected in you avatar or somewhere.

Sometimes I get confused about which type Im reading about

Hi,
We are all labelled be it T1 or T2 with the same tag and in some areas we can learn from each other. We all go through emotional problems on being diagnosed, and can help each other to get through with words of comfort, a shoulder to cry on and even a laugh along the way. By reading posts by T1s and T2s we can understand more about both conditions. Therefore I'd like to see the forum remain as it is.
Sue I take your point about adding a signature and have done so, do I get a goody bag now

Regards to all

it's all, well and good,Graham , but dont you think , for the newly diagnosed , wether type 1, type 2 ,or type to 2 on insulin , there is the time element to consider, (not haveing enough time to read thru everything for each type ), and needing to learn, how to cope, as fast as you can, about the low carbing for instance,

Hi Jeenie,
Perhaps the way forward is to have a Newbie section, splitting T1s and T2s into different groups stll leaves an awful lot of information for a Newbie to digest, I know how I found it when I first joined.

Graham

I would vote to leave well alone, at least for the moment. There are a number of issues here. The important thing with a board like this is that it is large enough for a community to develop, without becoming so large that it becomes unmanageable. At the moment, this is about right. There is a good community here, and splitting it up too much might jeopardise that. Although T1 and T2 are very different conditions, there is enough common ground that the majority of posts are likely to be of interest to both groups. If it was split up, most people would only look at their own areas of interest. I am a T2, but many of the posts by T1s have been of great interest to me - but I would have been much less likely to see them in a T1-specific area. Likewise, although I am not a T1, I do know a fair bit about it and I have quite often joined in discussions about T1. This would have been less likely to happen had they been in a T1 specific area.

Another problem with separate forums is what to do about the rarer forms of diabetes. Logically, if there were to be T1 and T2 areas there should also be LADA, MODY and GD areas. However, they would almost certainly be very low traffic and my guess is that they would be far too small to reach the threshold that you need for a community to develop.

I can see the argument for a "Newbie" area - but now that we have the "Ask the experts" forum that is more or less what that is. Personally, I would rather call that forum "Advice for the newly diagnosed" - because I'm a bit uncomfortable about the idea of self-appointed experts (and I include myself in that - I know a lot more about diabetes than many people - including most doctors - but I really wouldn't call myself an "expert"). That said, I might change my mind about this if this forum becomes a lot more popular in the future, then it might necessary to be split up to keep it manageable. However were that to be done I would plea for careful discussion to avoid ghettoisation. It would be interesting to know how much the traffic on this site is increasing - it would then be easier to judge whether this is going to become more of a problem in the future. Maybe our kindly Admin would like to post some summary statistics at some stage :?: :)

Lastly, to address the OPs point - it is useful to know whether you are talking to a T1, T2, parent or non-diabetic HCP (we have a handful). If you click on people's usernames then you will see their profile, and that will usually contain that information. Also, do a make sure that this information is correct in your own profile.

In short, if it ain't broke don't fix it - and this board ain't broke!

Hi, I think it should be left alone. It's been my saving grace since being diagnosed in mid Feb. As of this day I don't know which type I am as I was told one thing by the hospital and another by my GP, so where would that leave me ? :?

Where would we stop?

Juvenile onset type ones

Type twos

Type twos on insulin

Type twos who are really MODYs and LADAs

Impaired glucose tolerance but not diabetic yet

Friends and relatives who are not themselves diabetic

I am a working Mum of a young child with T1, so I want to be able to go quickly to appropriate articles. So I think it would be really great to have separate sections but this should not stop us all from viewing both T1 & T2 when we have time!!!
