Severe heartburn

Hi all,

Could anybody offer any advice on this.....

I've been T1 for about 4 years now. Not been too well controlled for the majority of that time. Over the past 6-7 months I've started getting heartburn but in the last month its become very severe. I only have to eat a ham sandwich and the next 4-5 hours are agony - like I've eaten glass. Over-the-counter 'remedies' such as Gaviscon will often work for half an hour, then it comes back with avengence.

Is it related to diet? If so, what kinds of food bring it on? I make all my own food from scratch - usually soup! Don't eat cakes, pastries or spicy foods. As I said, sometimes drinking water can bring it on. Is it related to diabetes? I'm in my mid-twenties and in good health otherwise.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has had a similar problem and how they remedied it. I'm not sure if its worthy of troubling my GP.

Thanks

Hi Silvermonkey,
i can sympathize, heartburn is incrediably painful. Any symptom no matter what it is should be checked out if it has lasted more than a week, thats the advise my nurse always gives me. Any number of reasons could be causing your heartburn, and because even water is bringing it on i would definately get it checked out. Youv'e tried over the counter remedies and they only ease it for a short period of time. So don't feel as if your troubling your GP, thats what he's there for.
Good luck,
Suzi x

Hi Silvermonkey,
You have my sympathy it is rotten but as you say not something you would trouble your gp with but it is horrible to live with constantly and does impair the qualtity of your life. I am not overweight either and had tried all the usual things. But when I was diagnosed as having a high fasting bg, I read this forum and decided to try low carbing, and my heartburn is no more. Honestly, I can eat spicy things garlic whatever and no heartburn at all.

Hey there I used to get very bad heart burn, but luckily for me its cleared up since eating as advised before 8pm each evening. Also found milk and a round of plain bread very good for heart burn if you're still getting it.

Since I adopted a low carb diet the heartburn and reflux are no more :D I don't remember the last time I needed to use an antacid. These symptoms had been getting worse in the run up to my diagnosis.

That's what they are there for,my wife suffers with same problem due to meds she is taking for MH problems and GP prescribed RANITIDINE which is pretty good and clears it up in no time, Worth checking even if it is for peace of mind, good luck and hope it clears up soon, mano

You should see your Doctor!

I get it every now and then and have no idea what triggers it. But I have found a tablespoon of cider vinegar and a little bicarb mixed together stops it.

I know it does not sound nice and is not the best taste but when everything else failed that always works a treat. Why I don't know.

i started out as undiagnosed diabetic for almost 2 years when i had terrible ''everything'' stomach problems, until i was beyond weak, i could barely eat anything, and woke up retching at 7am each day and would drive to the doctor/medical unit for an anti nausea injection, this went on for 2 months before the end; all the while i was blacking out 2-3 times a week during the last nine months. i was undiagnosed because my GP said i was crazy. three days after his final screeching fit that i was crazy, in the waiting room no less, i collapsed at his feet and went into a diabetic coma, at which point from a very far away place i could hear him screaming "wake up, wake, o sh*t what have i done, o god, o no!'' i eventually woke up with totally white hair, the RIp Van Winkle effect, when the twit finally figured out what was wrong and brought me out of it with an injection.

i was then diagnosed with type 2, then found out 9 months into insulin [lantus and humalog] that i was actually a type 1.5 LADA after more specified blood tests.

my stomach problems, also like yours with the heartburn, was eventually diagnosed via a nuclear medicine scan--eat a radioactive breakfast, lie still for 3 hours as they watch what your stomach does. my breakfast sat there and stared back. i was diagnosed with severe diabetic damage ''gastroparesis'' which means my stomach does not empty properly due to minimal muscle function, food just sits there, at one point for 4 days, equalling misery and agony.
i was put on Reglan for a year which then caused nerve damage all over my body as a side effect. I am now taking Cilroton which has no side effects and works quite well, although i still cannot eat very much, and my diet is becoming mostly lacto-ovo vegetarian, no soy products due to the goitrogens which wipe out thyroid hormones [natural or rx], no raw foods, rarely fish or shrimp. i also had an endoscope into my stomach 2x, each time 3 polyps were found, and once removed my stomach felt a lot letter all round, except i was still on the rx to make if function. i put these details in so you can see the time line progression into severe nerve damage...and of course each person is different.
in my opinion you too sound like you have gastroparesis. see if you can get the scan.

Hi there,
Gallstones also pop into my mind. What I thought was severe heartburn turned out to be gallstones or me. A scan will reveal any such prob's - deffo see yr GP.
