Should he be pushing for further help with managing Type 2?

Husband was diagnosed Type 2 middle of last year. Put on Metformin and asprin and Simvastatin.

He has had 2 check-ups with the practice nurse since then. Had some diet advice in a folder and has had his BP and HbA1c taken and the feet checks done. That's pretty much it.

He works nights and as such his eating is erratic - he's up in the day odd hours as we have a very young family and is eating during the day all over the place. Picking here and there a lot.

I'm wondering if we should be asking for extra help managing his condition regarding the night working. He takes his tablets in the day - as any 'normal' day worker would but is he getting the benefit if his schedule is all back-to-front?

Also, it makes bg testing difficult as his breakfast is probably actually his supper if you see what I mean, he's eating before he goes to bed in the morning. So we aren't sure if he's getting a proper view of his bg readings because of this and the fact his exercise is done at night rather than the day when he's testing also.

We need to start getting on top of this to be honest. Since diagnosis, he's not changed his eating habits much, he's still overweight, he smokes and has had a couple of high BP readings. Oh yes and his Simvastatin had to be doubled as his cholesterol shot up a few months ago. Since both his brother and his father have had heart attacks shortly after also being diagnosed with Type 2, I worry for his health and the future but I think he's being let down by the healthcare system to a certain extent as his lifetsyle/work situation is difficult and we don't quite know where to start.

Yes sounds like some more guidance re diet and when to take his medication might be good, some people on this forum are very knowledgable and might be able to help and tell you what things you can ask for from the dr etc.

He should be taking the tablets with food rather than at a set time, more than that I can't really help, but someone else might be able to.

I would agree that your husband's work/life situation isn't properly appreciated by his care team. As HLW has said, you need to establish the best times to take the medication. you and he need to do that in conjunction with his care team.

Metformin is best taken with food, the statin is best taken before going to sleep at night - in which case it might be best to take the statin in the morning after his shift is over, and before he retires for the day.

Both of you probably realise that significant lifestyle changes are required, he does need to want to make those changes though. To help that process alternative activities need to be found.

Regards, Tubs.
