Hi everyone I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice I'm type 2 and I'm on 1500mg of metaformin at night s/r any I had my machine yesterday and I started testing and my reading are pretty bad yesterday I did it after dinner and it read 12.0 and tonight I tested it before dinner and it was 7.0 and left it 2 hours then tested again and it came back 18.2 shock horror and it was saying underneath the reading ketone? I'm very care with my diet but I did have carbs tonight my doctor said I shouldn't test cause their was no need but I felt I needed to know myself and be more in control I don't want to bother the gp yet cause iv only just stared but I'm concerned about these reading any advice thank you

The meter is telling you to check your ketones, this is mainly for t1 or t2 on some meds. But if you're spiking off of 7 its not needed

Have a read of the lchf diets here and It's a good idea to use your meter to see what spikes you. It's a learning curve

This is what bugs me so much about the NHS. I think all diabetics regardless of type should be prescribed test strips. The current situation is like an athlete being told to run a mile, and the fitness instructor saying 'that's probably to the end of your street and back.' The blood sugars you are getting at the moment do need some work, but don't let the doctors make you feel like you are inconveniencing them. Your taxes pay their wages, and your health is extremely important. Show them your results, and tell them you want assistance in your diabetes management. Changing diet or medication levels will probably be necessary, but you are already on the right track to good control. Wanting to change and doing the checks you are doing puts you ahead of a lot of diabetics out there. Keep at it and you will get there :)

Normally you only need to worry about ketones if you are into the 20s or 30s and probably a T1 producing very little insulin. It's good that you have the meter as you can see it will help you adjust your diet to avoid spikes. Yes, reduce the carbs in your diet and increase the proteins and fats to get the overall nutrients you need/want. If you are overweight, reducing the carbs should help a lot with both sugar and weight reduction

Thank you for your replies yes I know what you mean about doctors they are not very supportive with type 2 testing but I'm glad I went ahead against his advice since being told I have dieabtices iv lost a stone in weight I'm now 10 stone I exercise as much as I can I have a crps nerve pain so I do pretty well considering but I do get a bit confused on the diet thing and it's hard to cut out the carbs at the moment I trying to find the best diet with as little carbs in any suggestions thank you so much ;)

The main foods to avoid or seriously reduce are potatoes, pasta, rice, bread, pastries, batter. If you give us a typical days menu of what you eat and drink we may be able to help you. Keep on testing. It's the best way to learn what your body can cope with. Remember ALL carbs turn into sugar at some point during digestion.

Thanks could you give me any suggestions on what food to replace theses thank you so much

Well a update on my weight I have lost half a stone in just over a week I don't know how it has happened but feeling happy :p

hi,
I've tried mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes, i felt like i couldn't cook a meal for a while but it's getting easier. my husband bought me a book The low-carb gourmet by Karen Barnaby, have made a few things and they've been lovely. also have Diabetes no thanks and my diabetic nurse loaned me a book Escape the diet trap by Dr John Briffa, my readings have gone from 12.? to between 5.4 and 6.9 in 4 months i've lost one and a half stone it's coming of very slowly, i've been told this is best. stay happy

Jill
