Should I have a second glucose tolerance test?

hello. As part of an NHS health check I had a fasting glucose tolerance test. The glucose result before the drink was 6.9 and two hours later was 12.2. I have no symptoms and feel well in myself. My Gp want's me to start Metformin straight away. I'm very reluctant to do this based on one test! I would like to improve my diet first and then have another test. Do you think that's a good idea or am I just putting off the inevitable?

While those numbers look fairly definitive & the OGTT is a very good diagnostic tool I've seen people come down from higher by following the low carb diet. Have you discussed the diet/exercise option with your GP? Is there much you can do in the way of carb and/or weight reduction?

I asked the GP about diet/exercise and he said it was too late for that. I would like to avoid meds if I can and am sure I can lose weight and reduce the carbs. Then have another GTT in a couple of months time.

Get yourself a blood glucose monitor & see what happens when you cut back on the carbs - another OGTT may not be helpful for a while yet. Did your Doctor tell which type of diabetes you have? Did they offer to do an HBA1C test?

Edited to add: I can't tell you whether you should be on medication or not - only you can make that decision. I've never been on any but my numbers were quite a bit lower than yours at diagnosis. There are plenty of people here better qualified to help with medication questions so hopefully someone will be along soon.

You are under the impression that going on the drugs is a one way street.
You can take advantage of their assistance to drop your BG, and then wean yourself back off them.
as for your GP's comment that it was "Too late for that" WRT diet & exercise i would say "Ballcocks" it may be hard but possibly do-able. I came back from insulin to oral meds to Diet & Exercise!

Hi and welcome. If you are overweight and hence a probable T2 then the GP is wrong. You can make the diabetes recede with the right low-carb diet; many have done this. You may always strictly-speaking be a diabetic but you may be able to get the blood sugar down without meds. BTW Metformin is a very safe drug

And you can make it recede without a low-carb diet!

Do exactly what you are doing! if your meter says bad - then act on it! If your meter says it good.. proceed with caution!
