Should I take statins?

If 30-40% reduction was possible, then very few people need be on statin. Most diabetics will be on a low carb diet, then why are most of us still required to go on a statin? Again, if the statin cardiovascular protective effect is via an anti-inflammatory mechanism (like aspirin), and not its cholesterol lowering effect, this could be a persuasive argument that diabetics should be on a statin. Especially as type 2s are so prone to cardiovascular complications.

I am a little confused now. I was going to ask what statins were but I found this thread :)
My specialist has told me to start taking statins but this is before he has even got the results of my cholesterol - I am assuming he thinks as I have to lose weight and my blood pressure is a little high that my cholesterol level must be the same!
He told me I would probably get cramps but that is just a side-effect I have to live with!!

When you become diabetic,Sam,they automatically offer this 'package 'of statin and aspirin. If your cholesterol levels are fine you do not really need the statins and certainly not the side effects that he expects you to live with!!However the choice is up to you,I would discuss this further with your doctor. It is ,after all, your body.

I had a lot of side effects with Sim and Atorvastatin. I have been on 10mg Rosuvastatin for 5 years and have had no probs.

The trouble is Simvastatin is the cheapest statin so it is always first choice. To get the other types you first have to have problems with Simvastatin!!

I will discuss it with him in June when I see him next. I was going to argue at the time but it was the first appointment and I was doing my 'best behaviour' routine. I really don't want to take them...I have my flora and I am eating a low fat diet so I think I will argue with him next time...thanks

Not so. I started on Simvador and have had no problems for 21 months. However, 3 weeks ago I went to collect a repeat scrip and the Pharmacist said they were out of Simvador and had substituted Simvastatin 'which was the same' as they could not say when they would get a resupply of Simvador. I now have problems with severe stiffness in both hands in particular first thing in the morning and added to that I have 'on the bone' pains in my arms and leg cramps.

I will be asking to get Simvador or a non statin substitute!

Buachaille, if I was you I would go back to the Pharmacy and demand that they get you the Simvador which is what your GP prescribed for you. As far as I am aware Pharmacists are not allowed to "substitude" any medication without the permission of the Dr who prescribed it.

Because of the Pharmacist you are in pain and should not have put up with it, go back and complain. If he doesn't want to give you the Simvador because you have already used some of the Simvastatin go and see your GP and complain to him, I certainly would.

Simvador is also more expensive than Simvastatin - I hope your pharmacist is not pulling a fast one at the cost of your wellbeing. I'm don't know how pharmacists are paid for prescriptions.
