I have type 2 for four weeks and take insulin four times a day,I also due to on other condition take steroids, which they tell me is slowing up the effects of the insulin, this mornings readings at 02.00 they where 5.8 at 5.45 they where 3.6 should I snack at 0.2.00if so on what, this is the third time in four weeks I have been below four regards to all

Hope you don't mind me asking but why have you been started on insulin?

If your on insulin you should have a small snack when below 4. Also if your taking a basal insulin (sorry you don't say what insulins you are on) you might need to reduce the dose to prevent the morning low bg readings, best that you discuss this with your diabetes team.

Hi thanks for the reply the insulin is novo rapid and levemir,I don't see the clinic staff until the 19th, of the month, can I snack at 0.2.00 or wait till I wake, regards

Hi. Being on steroids can be a real problem and I can understand the hospital starting insulin. May be if and when you come off steroids the insulin may not be needed. You are on the full Basal/Bolus insulin regime. Try to get the Basal level right first aiming for a fasting reading between 5 - 7 mmol then try to adjust the Bolus to get blood levels right after meals. You don't normally need to snack at all when on Basal/Bolus insulin unless you want to. If you are going below 4mmol during the night then your Basal is probably too high?

A reduction in your levemir will cut down on the night-time lows and will save you having to snack during the early hours, if your on a split-dose of levemir then the evening dose will need adjusting, if your on a once daily dose try moving the dose back to an earlier time in the day so you don't go hypo when your asleep, this way if there is a delay in your insulin absorption you will be able to act on it early evening.

As ever, if in doubt do check with your diabetes team, try ringing them and see if you can speak with them on the phone or get an earlier appointment. Good luck!!!!
