Hello
I’ve been on insulin for 6 months now, and I’ve been doing ok last hba1c was 57. I have found the last week my numbers have been going up, which I put down to the intense hot weather! so I upped my levemir before bed. Yesterday I felt a little unwell, achy legs but plodded on regardless. Went to bed at 7pm once handed kids over to hubby as I had a cracking headache, painkillers earlier hadn’t made any difference. Lay there for hours until pain went enough or sleep over took me, slept few hours and woke early. My sugars today have been stubbornly high. Dosed as I usually would and added unit for correction...no real effect. I’ve chucked the pens and now have fresh new ones from the fridge with a longer expiry on etc in case it was that, but I think it’s mostly being unwell...today I’ve steadily risen, from 12, up to now 25.2. I’ve taken insulin 2 hours ago! Think it’s just starting to kick in as now my reading is 19.6 so it is starting to drop again phew!
I’ve not had to do the sick day rules before...in practice...read them etc. So would I do a correction dose now or wait? Every 2 hours test blood sugar level, drink water and if stay high test ketones? I used a urine strip showed none. Used out of date blood ketone strip 0.1 so again nothing.
I’ll contact the nurse tomorrow just wanted check I am doing it right until then....many thanks for any support, tips, appreciate it with it being a weekend!

Hi Rose, not being an insulin user, I wouldn't like to comment on such an important matter, but I'm hoping one of my colleagues @Diakat , @Jaylee or @urbanracer might be able to comment. I think they're online.

Many thanks, my blood sugar level it is coming down finally rather than still going up so at least that is a positive. Although still high, sitting at 17 currently.

I'm sorry you're unwell. Here are the sick day rules from the DAFNE course I did.
https://www.chelwest.nhs.uk/services/medicine/links/DAFNESickdayrules2018.pdf
It suggests sick, high sugars and no ketones (0.1 in your case),
Sip sugar-free fluids (at least 100ml / hour)
Check BG and ketones every 4 - 6
take a correction dose together with a CHO dose with food, if you can eat something.

Brilliant help, thankyou! I was struggling to see/remember what to do with no ketones present but high blood sugars.

Hi @Rose22 ,

Sorry you're feeling unwell..

Achy legs like I've been cycling for England can be a symptom for me with high BG?
Sounds like your bloods are comming down now, but please keep a close eye they don't drop too rapidly.?

I have my own way to tackle a sick day. (Which I won't go into.)

I'll link this for you. https://www.england.nhs.uk/london/w...abetes-Sick-Day-Rules-Type-1-MDI-06042020.pdf

(I'm not implying possible CV19. Just hope the general advice on the link helps.)

Sounds like you're getting on top of it!
