Sick day rules/ % how how much extra insulin to take when you have ketones?

I use an animas vibe insulin pump which gives you your Tdd in the menu option I would use this when deciding the 20% for sick day rules not sure if other pumps are the same

I think I spoke too soon and didn't touch enough wood!

Came home this afternoon - bgs had come drastically down (4.9 pre lunch rising to 9.4 1 hour after but 11.8 2 hours after.) This afternoon since being back on my pump it's all gone wrong again. Blood glucose up and ketones slowly creeping back.

Currently on a temp basal of 250% abs bolused a correction of 30 units (scarily that's 20% of my TTD from the last 24 hours!)2 hours ago and still running at 33.6 -_- I am TIRED! Anyone wanna swap levels for a few hours so I can have a bit of normality?!! 2 year old currently jumping on me is not helping. :(

Poor you. :-(

Have you checked for pump failure again, replaced all the pump bits and bobs?

For me this kept happening until I got the hang of doing the infusion sets very carefully and by the book.

Is that 20% TDD a pen injection then? With high ketones and high BG you would not expect your BG to come down in the first 2 hours. You are very very resistant to insulin until the ketones come out of your blood. That is "Job #1" for the injected insulin, to clear out the ketones, perhaps because they are much more dangerous than high blood sugar, even really high blood sugar.

Was just thinking the same until I scrolled down and saw spiker had beaten me to the punch.

Probably best doing an end to end check (not sure of the mechanics for a pump though, maybe a little help from a pumper?) to be sure that something is not messed up there.

Maybe it is something like a bad batch of insulin that you are using on the pump?

Hope you get it sorted out soon and are able to figure out what the root problem actually was. I think there is value is doing the detective work and finding out what actually went wrong so that you have that experience for next time if it happens again.

Hope you get sorted and back on the level again soon.

/A
