Hi All.

It is that time of year with colds, bugs, viruses about ...
What do you do when ill , sick etc.

I have picked a virus up over the weekend [ cant be treated with antibiotics ]
Well not - unless it gives me a chest/ear etc infection my doctors receptionist said
this morning when I rang to cancel my diabetic reveiw with my DSN.
Have known her for years - she wouldn't thank me for passing this rotten
virus onto her or other patients in the waiting room.
[We have a very small GP's practice and surgery]

Am hot then shivery , bones and joints ache taking the pain relief and drinking
warm vimto and berroca vitaminC .
Blanket wrapped around my lap , heating on full wack too .
[which I then turn down when too hot !]

Am bothering over doing my insulin shots as am completely ' off ' my food too.
Dont want an hypo as a result . :problem:

what regime are you on, Anna? how many jabs per day?
Has your blood sugar gone up because you are ill, are you running quite high or is it more about feeling sick and your sugars not so bad?

Hi snodger.
My sugars peaked last week since last weds afternoon .
So I knew - I was brewing for something :(
I use hypurin porcine 2-3 split/trebled as need - plus victoza 1.2 once daily.
The victoza is safe to use as it just nudges things down a touch.

Hypurin porcine can have a kick like a mule hence why am fretting over this... :problem:
Plus it has been a long time since I was last ill like this .

Feel queasy no appetite and sugars are running much higher with the virus .
Last week I only dared to use small units of insulin was 12 -14.5 , the weekend has
seen me get as high as 19.8 - 20.1 without eaten much at all.
Now I only had 4 crackers today to stave of the queasyness!
Am sooo thirsty though - am sloshing about with all the fluids intaken .
Need running shoes on for trips to the loo too .

Anna.

it's grim managing insulin and illness, you have my sympathy.
I use quicker acting insulins plus a background, - it's easier to manage illness on that regime I think. so I'm going to be of only limited help I'm afraid. But the only thing you can do really is keep taking insulin - even if you don't take your full dose, don't drop it right down, because you still need insulin to cope with the background sugar your body is tipping out. It tips out even more when you are ill, so even if you aren't eating, you still need insulin in your system.
Just make sure you have a big bottle of lucozade or other sugary drink near you at all times. If you do go hypo and are still feeling sick so can't even keep sugary drinks down, wine gums or fruit pastilles can sometimes help because you can keep sucking them/keep them in your mouth, and absorb the sugar that way without having to literally put anything in your stomach.

Good luck!

It has been a wake up call and stark reminder that we 'me' can get sick/ill
Need the sick day rule's things to refer to.
Clever me got cocky and had thrown away all the leaflets on this .
With going almost a full12 months illness free ...
Wont be doing this one again !

Will certainly do as you suggest .
Uuuh how long does it take for a virus to go ?
Hubby says 5-7 days - reason he gives is my immune system needs time to catch up :eh:

Anna.

Anna,
general rules
http://www.diabetes-healthnet.ac.uk/Doc ... y%2010.pdf
DAFNE rules
http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/info/?page_id=141
they are almost identical to the ones I was given in France BUT they are for T1 and don't take into account the other meds you take
The one difference in my 'rules' is that if there are ketones and blood glucose is below 7.5mmol/l to test every two hours, to take insulin (and that is personalised so hard to say how much) but at the same time to sip a sugared drink (flat coke is a good one)
ie you may still need some more insulin but if you take it without some carbs then you may become hypo.

From personal experience the only time I have had high ketones since diagnosis, I was vomiting , glucose levels were low and I needed to drink sweetened fluids.

Merci
For these 2 links pheonix .
Much appreciated and I 'will' be hanging onto these .

Have decided to have some toast and do my insulin shot .
When 'can' stop shiverrrrinng !
I so dont like this illness palaver - it isnt easy

Thank goodness for all of the help and posts
To have this option/forum to turn to .
Is so amazing and supportive ... x

I follow the DAFNE sick-day rules. Really it depends on the illness, I had a stomach upset over the weekend and bg didn't really go up much, other times it can sky rocket and corrective measures need to be taken.

Hope you feel better soon Anna

Thanks nigel .

Its some rotten virus with a really shaky shivery bones about it .
Am grateful I have had my flu jab [just in case]

Was at 19.8 and 20.1 at the weekend so they had shot upwards big time

Thanks for your thoughts , means a lot when feeling rotten .

Anna.

Hi Anna 29 :)

You never get us men complaining we we get Man Flu.

Anyway I would recommend plenty of water, be carfull of all cold remedies as they do not help the stomach.

Make sure you have plenty of fruit and veg ( soup if need be ).

Heating does not help with indoor health atmosphere, so make sure you have fresh air.

I really hope you get better and back to normal as soon as possible.

Roy.

Hi Roy.
Thanks for your thoughts , true fact about getting some fresh air ...
Will try that - when I warm up :)

Love the piccy - it looks like me but I have more hair tied back in a pony tail .
It has been a long time since last ill - so am feeling this virus .

Like the idea of some veg soup - will make some when feeling more up to things

Thanks again for all your thoughts and support .

Anna.

Hi Anna,
Hope you are starting to feel better.
I have always found it handy to keep an emergency box next to the bed, especially when I am ill. Mine contains a bottle of lucozade, glucose tablets, BM machine, spare test strips, fruit pastilles, spare vials of insulin and a fun size bag of maltesers (because it's nice to have a cheeky treat when your sugars are behaving!).
Hope you manage to shake your virus off soon.
X

I had prob same virus a few weeks ago, when it had gone I was able to see my diabetic nurse and asked about this.I was told to test more frequently and to stop my fast acting insulin and just have the Lantus.I completely stopped my metaformin however a few weeks after that when i had diarrhea and my iron tablets and am back on normal doses now.My blood sugars did drop very low when unwell and now seem a bit higher, probably because I am on half my metaformin dose. Its bad enough being ill but trying to figure out what to do for the best is very frustrating..wish I had used this forum for advice then.Of course when I had flu I had hardly any test strips left and had to order an emergency supply for our chemist who delivers.

Hi All.
Last night was woken up with burning hot clammyness.
Hair wet through and clammy skin etc...
Hubby says my immune system is starting to react against the virus now.

The worst of things today the nonstop ribacheing coughing fits !
Have been using the sugar free Robitussin cough linctus since last night.
Used this before and it worked well - yet - now I am finding ,
Its okay but is just giving me temporary relief from the coughing fits .
Ribs ache with all the constant coughing am doing... :(

Will book appt at doctors for friday as I have never had a virus with as
vicious a cough as this one has
Might need antibiotics to help me battle this off ?

Thanks again for all your thoughts and help everyone
Much appreciated when feeling rough . x

I know JUST how you feel! This is worst cold/cough I think I've ever had. Thought it might be due to being newly Diabetic (more prone to infection??) but my neighbour says it's going around everywhere and is a nasty chesty one too, lasting weeks for many people apparently.

Hope you feel better soon... try eating lots and lots of Garlic. or make a thyme tea/infusion.. I'd say Elderberries too, but they're out of season!

Hope you feel better soon!
