Woke up this morning with so much acid and having to make myself burp as was feeling sick. Have gagged a few times but nothing coming up. Stomach ache from hell and do not feel hungry at all. I take 20 units of lantus in the morning and novorapid when I eat. My blood sugars have remained about 9-11 so far but I haven't taken any lantus. Do you think o should take the lantus? I'm worried that if I take it I might have a hypo as I don't think I can manage to eat anything today.

Your basal dose is not directly related to what you eat - it is for the glucose your liver will drip into your blood throughout the dat based on what your body thinks are its needs. Your body may need more sugar to cope with stress or illness. Hence, the possibility you may need more, not less, basal when you are feeling unwell.

As you don't know how much extra you may need, take the normal amount, test regularly and top up with bolus if your BG starts to rise.

I would also add to the good advice given above, drinks lots of water, try and eat crackers/biscuits so you do have some food on board and test more than usual, sickness can play havoc with your BG levels, Hope you're feeling better soon.

Thank you all for the advice. Have taken my usual dose of lantus this morning and blood has stayed between 7.9 and 9.8. Have nibbled on a ginger nut and a cracker but not managed to finish either. Have drank plenty of water but unfortunately have been sick a few times so feel a bit dehydrated. Have tested for ketones under mid flow and If I've done it right have no ketones, counted 15 seconds. Fingers crossed it's a 24 hour thing and will be feeling a lot better tomorrow. Can't do another day of trying to sit on toilet and head in sink at same time!

I hope you are feeling better tomorrow.

Do you take any corrective doses for BGs of over 7?
When my liver starts doing a sugar dump to help me with an illness, I still try to maintain a BG of between 4 and 7 by taking small bolus doses even when I have not been eating.
As with all diabetes, it's a bit of a balancing act: without any food, my liver supplies start to deplete so too long feeling bleurgh and my BG starts to fall again.

Fingers crossed you're over the worst.
