I have been taking Dapagliflozin for 10 days now and have certainly noticed increased thirst and going to the toilet more frequently. But yesterday and today I have a back ache that I have had to take pain killers for. I know that it can cause water infections but I have no other symptoms. Is anyone else on Dapagliflozin and what side effects have you had?

Hi Lulu.

Backache is listed as one of the side effects. Hopefully someone will be along to share their experiences of this medication with you.

Can dapagliflozin cause problems?
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. These usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side-effects continue or become troublesome.

Common dapagliflozin side-effects What can I do if I experience this?
Symptoms of hypoglycaemia: feeling shaky or anxious, sweating, looking pale, feeling hungry, feeling that your heart is pounding, feeling dizzyEat something containing sugar, such as a biscuit or a sugary drink (not diet), and follow this up with a snack such as a sandwich. Tell your doctor if you notice these symptoms
Back pain, urine and genital infections, difficulties passing urine. If troublesome, speak with your doctor
Changes to some blood tests. Your doctor will check for this

Hello, I thought I would give you my experience on Dapagliflozin (Forxiga), I was first in my medical practice to try it when I was in Scotland UK and I started it in October 2013. The doctors had just had the sales rep in the surgery and i was keen to be the guinea pig. I was already taking 2000 Metformin and additional Sitagliptin made no difference in controlling my blood sugar, so that's why I was prescribed it. Apologies to any men reading the next bit - I think one of the following side effects may affect females only.
I noticed an immediate increased urination every day about 2-3 hours after taking my morning tablet and extra thirsty. By the end of the first week I had raging thrush and was very miserable. However the doc prescribed me Canesten pessaries (rather than the tablet form which will kill good bacteria in your gut as well as in your ladygarden!) to be taken when required and I decided to work through it as I had already lost half a stone!!! After a few weeks I got into the good habit of taking the Canesten once per week as a preventative measure. The one week I forgot, the thrush was back so I hope that tip helps others. But every 3 months at the chemist, I had a fight to pick up my 12 Canesten pessaries, they are so interfering they question why you would get thrush so much and think the doctor has made a mistake on the prescription.
Today, 8 months later I got my best ever blood results back HBA1C= 6.4. and my new GP (in Australia) has suggested that I now stop the Forxiga as I have lost... wait for it.... 30KG (4 stones & 10lb) in the 8 months I have been on it. I am delighted as Forxiga is only available to me in Australia on a private prescription over $300 per month which is beyond my means. (God bless the NHS in Scotland)
As for other side effects I don't remember any to be honest. I have multiple health conditions and take all sorts of medication but this is the best I have felt for years (age 50). I do get mild hypos but just carry glucose tablets and have a banana. The side effects of starting Metformin were much worse than Forxiga, although they improved after a few weeks.
I hope this helps anyone thinking of giving it a try. It has made me lose a huge amount of weight which was a major issue in my life. My advice would be think positively and be determined to work through any side effects and use the Canesten preventatively.
Best wishes, Lucie

Hi Luciealexa
I am so please that you shared your experiences with me and others. I have been on many diabetic drugs over the years that were supposed to be the miracle weight loss blood lowering cure. Unfortunately non worked for me in the long term. As I said I had only been on Dapagliflozin for 10 days and had 1 bout of thrush and a urinary tract infection ( now on antibiotics) My DSN said to try 5mg tablets and once tolerated go back on 10mg. I did lose 5 lbs in that time. Can I just ask did you change your eating habits or exercise to help lose the weight? I too am 50 years old am going through the menopause, so don't know if hot flushes etc are because of this rather than tablets. Thanks again for info. :)

I've been on the dappa now for about three and a half months and I am absolutely miserable. The thrush is practically constant and my emotional state and energy are flagging. Trying to get canaestan this frequently is humiliating especially as non-diabetic nurses are making me do sexual health tests due to the frequency. I am perfectly clean thank you you inconsiderate a******s. This medication is my last stop before insulin and I'm 27. I say if you have other pill-style options...take them not this. I haven't lost weight, I've gained nausea though and symptoms akinned to hypoglycemia while my levels are my normal range.
