the tools to fight it are much better than 20 years ago which is very encouraging
my advice is to press for appointments -- don't just wait for them to happen

Maculopathy can be serious - it depends on what the eye clinic finds when they do further tests.

When someone is referred to the eye clinic for maculopathy, they will usually have an OCT scan. This will show if the macula (the part of the retina where we see things in detail) is swollen or not. Quite often there is no significant swelling. In this case the patient doesn't need treatment and they are returned to screening. On the other hand, if the macula is significantly swollen, (known as Clinically Significant Macular Oedema or CSMO), treatment may be offered (gentle laser or injections into the eye).

Early maculopathy can improve with good control of glucose, blood pressure and lipids so it's a good idea to work on these while waiting for the hospital appointment.
