I was diagnosed with DB Type 2; 2 yrs ago; by being screened. Up until then I'd not got any idea that I had it. Very shortly (days) after being diagnosed I developed Carpal Tunnel in both hands (which seems to come and go) and also a another worrying symptom for a guy in his early 40's, slight numbness/tenderness of the penis and testicles, this tenderness also extends to the bladder. These problems make sex not as attractive as it used to be, also when I've been for pee and my sensitivity is hightned, my bladder doesnt feel relieved. Has anybody else had any of these problems and have you managed to to get over them.

I have had patients who have had sensory neuropathy extend to the genital area. Your GP would be interested to hear about your urinary problems too as you may also need other tests to see if you are retaining urine in the bladder, have a big prostate or not or are having kidney problems.

The way to help genital neuropathy is the same as for other neuropathies. It will probably take a year or so to reverse this degree of neuropathy and it could take longer.

You need to make a strenous effort to get normal blood sugars for as much of the time as possible.

Reducing the sugars and starches in your diet will help you achieve this.

What medications are you on? Have you other complications? What is your hbaic and what has it been in the past?

My Hbiac was normal this time round so hopefully going in the right direction now. I've been to see my GP, because in July 2007 i had a showing of blood in my semen (lasted only a couple of days), this is probaly around the time the numbness started (not sure whether there's was a connection though). I've been to see a Urologist privately and have been checked out for prostate cancer and had various other tests (bladdrer ultrasound) but came out negative, the only thing that did show any sign was a urine flow test was a little on the slow side. Stopped going to see the specialst in the end has he just ended up scratching his head. Do you think this problem may nerver damage because of my DB2 and if so could it be reversible to any extent.

It does sound like it. The urologist has also excluded other problems.

What was your hbaic?

There is a difference between what is truly normal and what you may be told is "acceptable".
