Hi all, I've done slimming for years and didn't really have hypos until I started insulin and became unwell with infections. Any suggestions on anything I can take to counteract hypos and stay on plan. Only thing that brings me out of them is lucozade and coke. any suggestions? Thanks :)

What insulin are you on? Do you count carbs?

@eimear66 I know nothing about Slimming World, but a hypo is a medical issue, so I'd take what I needed and not worry, especially as you've said Lucozade works well for you (it does for me too).

@eimear66, just treat your hypo's the same way as you always do, but if your eating less food now on the SW diet (in the way of carbs) then your going to need to adjust your insulin doses to reduce the hypo episodes, if your unsure how to do this run it all by your DN/DSN.

I take lantus solostar insulin 26 units every evening. I don't count carbs yet, I've just recently started it about 6 weeks or so

When you hypo how low is your bg going? If lucozade works to bring it back up that's probably the best thing, is there a certain time of day you're going low? Can you spot any trends anywhere?

If you're on lantus only, then it may be you need to adjust your dosage if you're getting hypos. I also have problems with hypos and hypers when I'm sick with infections or anything else on top of my usual. Pain level also seems to make my sugar levels go crazy at times. So I've had to adjust lantus a fair bit. I still don't think I've got my basal right.... every time I get it just right my body does something to change it and I have to start again. My endo recommended though that dropping lantus should be done by 2 units at a time... so drop 2 units and wait 3 days to see if it improves or not and keep going with that until you find the right dosage that stops your hypos. Also I agree with others about watching the carbs... maybe you don't eat much carbs and your dosage is too high for what you eat as well. Physical activity also can contribute to hypos.
