I was diagnosed 5 years ago during lockdown!!! I was put on Metformin immediately & not given a chance to reverse with diet and exercise!!! I have suffered with constipation all my life and sadly over past 5 years it has got much worse!!!! I now have feacal impaction regularly NO FOOD OR DRINK makes any difference. I paid to see private consultant who explained after tests that I have slow gut motility I’m not sure if this is the same as neuropathy???? I keep thinking it’s Metformin to blame but am frightened to stop taking it!!! Has anyone else had the same problem???

have issues with constipation, senna seems to work fairly well and i continue to take it for a few days after clears with 1 tablet rather than 2. Speak to your gp with concerns. Upping fluid intake should help at least a little bit. motility itself never been mentioned i do have other neuropathy nerve dmg.

edit added below:
NB im not on MF never have been only exp is as above.

From my experience with MF it had the exact opposite effect so badly I had to slowly cut down to 1 a day

I do know that for most people MF causes diarrhoea BUT I’m the opposite sadly and it has made constipation chronic and I’ve had 3 bouts of impaction in 6 weeks. I didn’t have BM for 6 days & had to stop eating!! Neuropathy in feet, hands etc is often mentioned BUT not in gut …

i'll add a touch more info: impacted bowl, when did goto loo lots of blood in it was the reason finally admitted to hospital for me and came out with diagnosis of diabetes. i had been unable to sit down to the loo for over a week.

I really hope you get some help as I totally understand how awful impaction is!!!! No amount of laxatives worked for me I went to GP & was given Picolax the prep for colonoscopy which worked!!!

its more or less resolved now with bouts every so often used to be constantly (when took amount of nsaids prescribed) taking little as possible now. surprised at picolax being used might be a difference between type1/2 for bowel prep i was given an enema to use in the morning which was WAY better experience than having the skitters for 24+ hours only morning of the scope. had picolax around 10 years ago prior for endoscope (same issue with blood in stools) little bit of more further useless info: i was given Diclofenac tablets for pain hospital on admission were horrified never ever should of been prescribed that blood loss
