snack in evening?

I'm relatively new to all this, only diagnosed last November.
Still in the "honeymoon period" so only on low doses of insulin 4 times a day.
My question is, once I have taken my insulin to cover my evening meal ( which is usually around 4.30/5pm what do I do if I want to have a snack later on in the evening? When I do have something eg. cornflakes or cup of tea and 2 biscuits it sends my BG level up high just before bed.
Is it ok to have another injection to cover the snack, or is this the wrong thing to do?

Many thanks in advance.

hi,
basically i follow the rule not to inject under 10g carb but anything higher i inject the same as in the daytime :D hope this helps

Castaway,

Any snack in the evening containing more than 10g of carbs will have to be covered with insulin, especially cornflakes and biscuits. Just be careful though, you don't want to mis-judge your insulin dose and go hypo in your sleep.

Many thanks for your replies :)
To be honest I'll be so glad when I'm no longer in honeymoon and can work out my ratios more accurately...it's all so confusing.
Think best thing to do is try not to snack in the evening, unless it's fruit or nuts.....oh I so miss my chocolate biscuits though :(

Some fruits will also need to be covered with insulin, depending on type of fruit and size/weight.

hi,
if its any help my son has a chocolate snack a jack rice cake. they are quite large and being chocolate he likes them . The good thing is that they are low carb and dont give him any blood spikes.

hi
the best thing is to try and have a big dinner with choc biscuit straight after for desert ---no problem. take ur insulin as per usual.

myself i am like u i get hungry around 9/10pm again and go mental 4 food.WHY coz i didnt eat much during day!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 slices of toast , corn flakes , more biscuits , fruit , tea , yoghurts, popcorn, juice all b4 i go to bed. i then must take at least 18 units extra insulin but find il be fine during nite then and ok sugar levels in morning.

i am 24 and excercise reguarly so may get away with it. the best thing to do is have 3 big meals during day to prevent late nite snacking

Hi Brendon,

That's a lot of food and insulin before bed, but you are obviously fine as you say your bg readings are fine during the night and next morning. Just be careful it doesn't catch you out some day, I know I would be wary taking so much insulin before bed.
