Snacks and Putting on Weight

Have you read some of the old posts with CKD they say they got better function on a lchf diet (your dietitian will pull its hair out) but low/moderate protein, low carb, high fat has worked for some kidney guys
And mice too Ketogenic is under 60g. Carb

Thanks. No matter which way you look at it GFR 52 is grade 3 CKD. I am treated with kid gloves when it comes to meds because of this.
I am 55 and know it could be worse but if my prediabetes develops into diabetes I am fully aware of the implications (I was a nurse).

What I do find strange is how since I went on LCHF the GFR went up to 63. I was ecstatic. My next test a couple of months later was 52. Thats a big drop down in a very short space of time.

Ask your dr, I would think you are treated with kit gloves because you have only one. I wouldn't say you had CKD. I would say you have one perfectly working kidney with normal life expectancy

I think you are scaring yourself over nothing.
Preventative statins and watch your BP

SJC i agree with jack here. I have been dealing with top renal consultants for the last 16 year and none of them would put you as stage 3 with one kidney. They might say you had a slight impairment and to keep an eye on you but that is all. Stop scaring yourself

Jack my kidneys aren't straight forward. Yes I am stage 4 CKD but the causes for it effect what I eat.

I have bi-lateral renal tubular acidosis. This has caused nephrocalcinosis and CKD. I am quiet the expert at looking after my kidneys. As all the consultants thought they would of failed years ago.

I am lucky that my kidney disorder is so rare I have been privy to the top consultants in my area and been used as a teaching aid so I have been very much a part of my own care. I intend to take control of my diabetes in the same way. I have three kids and plan to be around for a long time

I think after 16 years you would have a clue or 3
I just read what some of the kidneys guys have said about lchf and passed it on. Whether it would benefit you I wouldn't know.

The hard core low carb where it's ketogenic is LC extreme
I know they are using ketogenic diets mct oil for epilepsy treatment and found it interesting that there is studies with it for kidney disease

Are you taking statins? You could ask for a product called Calogen which helped me to put on weight it is fat based and virtually carb free I got mine from my Gp
CAROL

Right! Lol.
I went to the doctors today. It was a new doctor in our surgery and she's done her homework and read up about me before I went in the room.

She was wonderful! For s start she was taking the proverbial out of low fat foods which thrilled me. She said to increase my carbs another 30-40 gms a day but to be careful with what I choose. She thinks the low carb saturated fats are a great idea and said to even increase those fats by another 20% per day. When it came to my kidney she said to increase my protein by 20% a day too.

I told her about all the differing opinions I have had about my kidney. Her answer was that I had a long way to go before my kidney was in serious trouble and it's NOW that matters with my weight going down so much. That's why she said to increase protein a bit more.

Now, some of you might have more experience with kidney disease then me but I can tell you this.

After the removal of my kidney, my urologist told me I MUST take a low protein diet, no salt etc. He even said I wasn't allowed to take paracetamol for pain ( I have a lot of pain), which is ludicrous because it goes through the liver not the kidney!!

I have seen around six different GPs since my operation two years ago, and I have had differing advice from all of them. I have had advice from, 'You have grade 3 kidney disease and if you don;t look after your kidney you will be down to dialysis" to " oh don;t worry about it, it's fine for one kidney ( and a lot of middle of the road sitting on the fence type comments in between).

I have been confused by professionals for two years and when you are confused and don't trust explanations you are getting, it's more scary. My urologist has actually scared me the most! It's a couple of Gps that have scaled the seriousness of my kidney down. It has been hard getting so many opinions that have been differing.

I am a sceptic by nature now. The medical profession has let me down in the past so I find it hard trusting them anyway.

I do know this. At the moment I am very thin and it has been depressing me greatly. I shall follow this GPs advice.
Thanks for all your input.

We all know you are sh*t scared and have compassion. I know I'd be freaked if I was told... You have cancer and we're cutting your kidney out.. You don't overcome that in a week.

Is this similar to what she said? Carbs will put on weight with enough protein and the balance fat
60-70g of protein sounds a good amount to rebuild you.
Carbs 250g if you can do it with your BG
Have nothing low fat, dairy, butter no marge
Olive oil and coconut oil are both very healthy

Hi I don't think that many carbs is going to be good. I will increase maybe up to 150 gm max. I haven't had anything low fat since April. I have only been using olive oil, butter, raw organic coconut oil.
She didn't say anything about the overall carb ratio. She told me I was doing the right thing but to add a little more of the right carbs. I will take on board that 60-70 gm protein. I have been having about 45-50 though anyway.

Long term the 45-50g would probably be right 0.8g per kg of your lean body mass.... BMI minus your fat percent
Fats give you energy but isn't good for putting weight on, carbs do that and if your BG is 150g and ok, that's the amount to take
It won't take long to see if you're stacking on weight
