Snacks

Hi . I'm a parent of an 18 year old who's just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, two days into her life at University. It's very hard to see your daughter trying to cope with everything at once. Carbs counting, glucose testing, cooking, and if that's not enough ,studying. My question is, she doesn't eat much during meal times, but she likes to snack. Is there anything that you can snack on without carbs and without having to use insulin every time she whats to snacks. Thank you.

Sorry to read about your daughter - I don't think there is a good time to be diagnosed with diabetes but just when she starts university is especially daunting.

Regarding your question on snack, I have a few thoughts
- if she is injecting, the usual advice is she can have 10g to 15g carbs between meals without the need to inject. This woudl be something like an apple or a small packet of crisps or a small bar of chocolate
- there are low/no carb snacks which are usually meat/protein based such as pork scratchings, peperami or cheese
- over time, she may get used to injecting or get a pump so snacking between meals and taking insulin becomes normal: it's what I do.

It all seems pretty hard at the moment but it gets easier and diabetes should not become a hindrance to your daughter's life: there are plenty of type 1 role models as actors, musicians, athletes and even politicians.
