hello,

So I found out I was type 2 diabetic st the same time as finding out I was expecting. I am currently 11weeks. So pretty much straight away I was put into insulin ( humalog and humalin I) as this is my 2nd pregnancy and had gestational in my previous. Anyway my sugars are anything between 4& the highest was 11.7. I am on 8 units at breakfast 10 each at lunch and tea and 18 before bed. I was given metformin but it made me very sick. I am having to test my sugars before a meal and 1 hour after and before bed. Recently I am having hypos during the night, and a odd couple in the day. I am feeling hungry but confused if my sugars are higher then they want them to be ( 5.3 fasting and 7.8 after food) do I eat to stop the hunger, but then risk increasing my sugars? Also I could gve the same meal twice and have completely different readings each time either the target or reading really high? I know stress doesn’t help, but I am so confused and stressed about it all? Please can someone help or advise me.

Hello, I had GD which turned Into t2d.
I was told that the placenta releases hormones and other chemicals that affect your blood glucose reading. So at different times readings are different.

Having high blood sugar is bad for baby and makes them grow really big. I had my bg under tight control and gave birth to a 9,5 pound baby.

Best to speak to diatitian as well as join boards for mothers with GD as the diet will be a better different than for non preggers.

Speak to docotkr or Diabetic midwife about hypos and high sugar and they will advise. But I always kept a bag if sweets in case my bg went really low. Mind you that GD gets worse as you go along so it's important to get a handle on it.

Absolutely go back to your HCPs and tell them what is going on - maybe ask about what amounts of carbs you are expected to eat, and when, to be stable and have normal BG readings, also do you adjust the levels if you feel too ill to eat - put them through the wringer and extract as much information as possible - and if they can't answer ask to speak to someone who can.

Please try not to panic. You are not alone, GD is very common and unfortunately many people find that it progresses to full diabetes in a second (or third!) pregnancy. (I'm a T1 so pregnancy was easier for me in that I was used to insulin from day 1, but there were plenty of GD folk at my clinic. ) Absolutely get onto the phone to your HCPs and get them to help. Regarding hypos (I had LOTS of experience with these during pregnancy as keeping my blood sugars tight was good for my babies but not so good for my hypo awareness) I would suggest you have glucose tablets (or equivalent) with you at all times (specially at night), and make sure your family, friends and colleagues are on board with the situation. If you're driving, make sure you do a blood test before you get behind the wheel and have glucose in the car with you.

Good luck. You can do this.

Thank you, wirh my first pregnancy I gave birth naturally and he was 6lb 7oz. I was told tk be really careful with carbs etc. This time around food before which I was ok with eg soup eggs on toast, seems to either make my sugars drop dramatically after one hour , or spike them really high? I am only 11 weeks so finding it hard as last time it was just the last 10 weeks of pregnancy I was monitored. I am so scared and worried and cannot relax. I am dreading bed time in case I have a hypo. It’s very hard to rest when I have an extremely active 2 year old as well. I just want everything to be ok and be as healthy and careful as I can be. X
