Type of diabetes
Type 1
I went for my annual retinal screening today. The nurse taking my details asked how long I had been on insulin and metformin. I had been on tablets for 3 years with ever-increasing HbA1c before they finally did the tests and established I was type 1, putting me on an insulin regime.

Young arrogant nurse said 'You're type 2, if you were type 1 you wouldn't have survived for 3 years without insulin'.

I'd put it down to youthful arrogance and move on but these things tend to get put in your notes and cause endless trouble down the line.

I know, for ages I had in my hospital notes that I was a smoker, trying to get it off was an uphill battle, the usual question was when did you stop, I never started. My health is bad enough.
I am at the point where I go in guns blazing.

Sadly many in the NHS have no idea about Late onset T1 including my diabetes GP who had just come off her diabetes training course. It's obviously not part of their training and DUK doesn't mention it either. When I argued with my DB GP she just said you're not T1 therefore you are T2. She also said she dealt with 500 diabetes patients (oh, yes) so knew more than me. The arrogance of some medics knows no bounds. I was on tablets for 8 years before insulin and stick thin all the way thru.

I know what you mean. Once it is written in your notes it is taken as gospel. My 2nd daughter was born in the ambulance so when the 3rd was due my wife was advised to go in as soon as labour started. We went in but the contractions stopped and some nurse decided she must have come in "because of fear". That was put in her notes and was repeated back at her ad infinitum. No one took the slightest notice of her repeated explanations.
