Hey there,

I am based in Germany. After the Type 2 Diagnosis in May 2017 I instinctively dropped the carbs. I went to an educational course, where we were also told that 50% of each meal should be carbs. The adviser there was very negative about 'Low Carb'- brain needs glucose. There where 6 participants and three men where accompanied with their wives. One of the females said..".I lost weight with this programme advertised by the pharmacies....with carb reduction.....so I am not having any bread with my salad". The health adviser replied, now you know.....you can have your bread with the salad" Also she gave us some scary stories about people eating low carb and how it messed them up and how she has to get them back on track. She was an old lady....so argueing made no sense.......

Since then I have gone further down the road with Low Carb.....and I feel great....lost about 10Kg so far.....well I hope I will loose some more.

Yesterday went to the diabetics clinic to get a check up and was shocked to see in the waiting room, just beside the water, a bowl of mars celebration. In a room full of diabetics they are giving out sweets.....Well got to see the doctor and she was happy that I reported feeling better. I also told her I quit the Metformin (never took it in the firstplace, because those big tablets looked too scary for me, but I have one package as a reminder). The doctor asked what made me so successful.....I tried avoiding the term low carb and instead said 'I drastically reduced my carbohydrates'. When accidentally the term low carb came out anyway she said: " But don't go too low, your brain needs carbs"But she looked at my blood sugar diary and was all happy about it. And she said, to test only once weekly. I nearly test everyday.

With my GP, I just had a discussion, wheter I should join the DMP (Disease Management Programme). I somehow do not feel adressed by this programme. Well it includes the quaterly HbA1C, but in my view I am not deterioating, but making progress.Went to Eye Screening in DEC and it also was faboulos. I think joining the DMP would classify me as more ill than I am, but on the other hand it would be also influence the statistics in a positive way.....The GP also said, well now you are better, because you are eating low carb.....but when you are returning to normal eating habits the Diabetes will return." There was the assumption made, that I will return to normal eating style, but that it is just a matter of time. Quite discouraging. Well with the help of this forum I have helped myself...and in two weeks I will get the results of my bloodwork. I am already excited.

Welcome and well done on doing your own research.

Well done for sticking to your guns and being pro-active. You will prove them all wrong.
You will learn so much more from this forum that you ever will listening to that sort of rubbish.

Hi @Undlosgehtes,

Congrats on sticking to your guns and dealing proactively with your condition.

I am in Germany too and agree with you on the backwards approach to diabetes here. So, really well done on following your own advice -- it will be worth it.

Good for you, great progress in a short time. Success stories can be so inspiring for other people, so thanks for posting.

And welcome in to the forum - no longer a silent "reader only"

Well congratulations and just keep you nose on your track you are doing just the best you can do. And a very fine weightloss

Congratulations great that you’ve shared your story to inspire and motivate others. Unfortunately in the UK too many HCPs still seem to be discouraging to us low carbers - think the main tenet, like in your case, is that it is unsustainable over the long term so almost why don’t we accept it and take the pills? Change will come though - lots of us on this forum are changing their lives around and maintaining this WOE for several years - and some HCPs are slowly starting to get the message.
Well done I think it’s even harder without support don’t know what I’d have done without this forum and my online supporters.

I started low carbing back in the early 1970s and only when persuaded to stop did I feel ill - very very ill when I ate carbs when pregnant - I developed pre-eclampsia.

I always correct people when they do the non sequitur of the brain needs carbs/eat carbs - I always respond 'If my brain requires glucose then my liver will supply it - what glucose containing foods do you eat to fuel your brain?"
If they start to explain that glucose comes from carbs I smile and nod, and then ask "And what else?" so as to try to get them to think - for once.
I have been asking some barbed questions when called in to be put onto tablets again - like that is ever going to happen.

Sounds like bribary to get people into DMP. My GP did the same to me. When they found out I stopped taking my Statin drug they stopped testing my cholesterol levels.

Thank you so much for all the positive feedback. Yes I think it needs some positive stories.....otherwise it would be too hard to cope.....and the journey so far has been easy. I never thought I could get on without pasta..........i was a pasta lover, could have eaten them everyday in different variations.....and now here I am nearly one year after diagnosis and have not had a single bite of pasta since then......and it works....no cravings and most important I do not feel deprived. I think this is important, not to feel deprived....then it works. I found so many alternatives and as I made it a lifestyle and not a diet I am not tracking my exact macros as this would stress me out. I trust myself to choose the right ingredients, when cooking and for me this approach works.

I after diagnosis counted 1 and 1 together....it made somehow "click"......so why are HCP so resistant and blind? Is the solution too simple and too obvious?

Well, in places like this we can share our knowledge and hopefully encourage others to come down this road with us.

Congratulations on being able to overcome the FUD against low carb.

I prefer to call it carbs lite fats friendly...less intimidating for the misdirected.

@kokhongw I like your description.....also fits. It is amazing how well, we can support ourselves, give encouragement and go this journey together. Waiting until some guidelines change? Well, that is not me!! Additionally to my diagnosed Diabetes I have had graves's disease diagnosed over a decade agog. I took carbimazol for quite a long time, then stopped and then had several relapses. Usually the doctors advice is to remove the thyroid completely with the 2nd relapse. I decided for another round, convinced there will come some advances............and guess what since low carbing my thyroid levels have been great. So since it is so anti inflammatory I guess I can keep my thyroid as well.

Fantastic job all around. So nice to hear. Thrilled about the thyroid too.

Sounds like bribary to get people into DMP. My GP did the same to me. When they found out I stopped taking my Statin drug they stopped testing my cholesterol levels.
Then they 'don't have any data on how LCHF affects cholesterol' - otherwise they might find out that it lowers cholesterol, and for some reason they don't want to take the chance. My tiglycerides went from 2 at 3 months to 1.5 at 6 - but I have had no tests since.
