So fed up of feeling ill and tired all the time. Had too many days off work sick this year because of being ill, exhausted and run down. So far I've had tonsillitis, a kidney infection, bowel inflammation and just yesterday severe dizzy spells and tiredness. Been put on medication, then more medication, then different medication. At my last check up protein was found in my urine test so I was put on medication for that. Can't seem to lose weight either. I do try to eat low carb but I struggle to find things to eat, especially at lunch time. I've been taking salads but chewing on leaves, vinegary dressings and oniony coleslaw makes me feel a bit queasy, so I've been eating the coldmeat and cheese only! Tonight my blood sugar is sitting at 22.5 because I had some rice with my dinner. I'm currently on 2x Gliclazide and 2x Metformin each day along with Lisinopril for the protein leaking from my kidneys. I'm only 32 and weight 12 & a half stone so overweight but not massively so. When I go to my check ups with the diabetes nurse, I'm made to feel like its all my own fault then they give me a prescription for yet more pills. It's not really helping though! What do I need to do to get control of this?

Hey @jacqui-anne
you're having a rough old time of it from your post.

what are your normal fasting levels in the morning ?

as you are already aware of eating less carb to assist BG's have you looked at the low carb forum for some tasty recipes.

i am tagging some lovely people that know a bit about getting numbers in better ranges.

My fasting levels can be anything between 5 and 10, lately they have been hovering around 8-something. I know all about low-carb - I lost 3 stone just before I was pregnant (my little boy is now 3) then put it all back on and now I can't seem to get back on track and my health is going downhill. I'm my own worst enemy sometimes. Think I have a dieting split personality! Some days I'm like "carbs are the devil" then other days I just think "stuff it, why can't I eat normal food like everyone else?"

Hi. The 'normal' food that others have is in general a bad diet and in that sense not 'normal'. Convince yourself that your lower-carb diet is much healthier and all that carb-laden stuff on the supermarket shelves is bad and to be ignored. Keep the proteins and fats up which will help you avoid the early hunger that carbs bring.

Dear Jacqui-Anne,

Sorry to hear you are having a rough time of it. All those illnesses plus a diabetic nurse who sounds like they could do with a swift boot up the backside. How is getting diabetes your fault?? complete rubbish. If you look around and see all the other 32 year olds who weigh 12.5 stone wandering around, how many of them are diabetic? not many, I'll bet!

Your diabetes is something that has happened and it is your diabetic nurse's job to deal with it, not make you feel uncomfortable and even worse than you do already. I am sure that this sort of attitude is adding to your feelings of 'oh stuff it!'. There is a doctor at my surgery who lectured me about my weight like I was a child. I asked her to pack it in, but she continued. I complained and switched doctors. Then I found a doctor in the same surgery who actually diagnosed my diabetes, talked me into getting a lot more exercise and we have built a sort of 'team' approach to the diabetes which has worked brilliantly.

Regarding diet, I am not a strict LCHF eater. I eat moderately low carb and walk off any excesses (I am sure your 3 year old keeps you running around). Rice obviously doesnt agree with you, but I am sure that there are plenty of things that are good to eat and won't spike your blood sugar. (~I had rice last night I didnt even DARE look at my meter this morning).

Find yourself a doctor at your surgery who is sympathetic but also positive

I have not been to see my diabetes nurse for a year and a half due to how she made me feel I ended up in tears, which lead to me being very ill and in hospital so I went to see my doctor who has refereed me to a community nurse maybe try that to see if you get on better with a different nurse. Ask your nurse about try an injection called Lixisenatide my nurse has just put me on that my sugars where 25mmol after just 14 days my sugars have come right down to 9mmol it also helps to loose weight and Instead of bread at lunch time or salads try having crisp bread or crackers as change or even wholemeal pasta with tuna and light mayo as change every now then then
