Hello
Does a cold/flu type bug affect blood sugars? I only got my meter on Tuesday and by that evening I was coughing, sneezing, bunged up nose which won't stop running, feel so achy and hot and cold. Readings all over the place, I was expecting them to be high as I was only diagnosed about 7 weeks ago and have been following a low carb diet, I felt so much better, I've been losing weight (definitely need to!) but just feel so miserable right now. Spent last night craving honey on toast but resisted, I won't cave diet wise but is there any point using my meter until I feel better as the numbers are really depressing me. Any advice would be really welcome. With thanks in advance x

Ranging from 7.5 to 15.4, as I've been feeling sicker they seem to be getting worse, I had the same tea on Wednesday 8.2 before and 7.7 2 hours after and Thursday 8.9 then 9.8 after (same food same amount!). I've also recently been put on hrt and have achillies tendinitis and rheumatoid arthritis which are both playing up this week. I just feel so rubbish.

Yes, colds and flu will throw your BG figures up in the air and sometimes you will doubt the meters accuracy as they are so elevated.
If you have a diary showing your normal figures from a usual meal, you shouldn't go far wrong, just concentrate on ridding yourself of that cold. Unfortunately with D you are a little more susceptible to picking up the bugs going around, but I have found lchf being a good fresh diet helps stave them off in the first place.

Watch out if you are taking any cold remedy syrups - they are loaded with sugars, as of course is orange juice.

Are you on any medication for the Type 2?

Thank you nidge247, unfortunately I have only just started with a meter and have no normal results to compare with! I think I started feeling ill about an hour after my first self test so I guess I'll have to wait and see. It's annoying because I started lchf the day I was diagnosed and have felt so much better. Yes I realised about the cough syrups just before I took a swig so have got something sugar free from Boots!
Azure, the quack gave me metformin 500mg sr, which gives me regular burping sessions but I can live with that for now.
