Type 2
Ok so I was diagnosed with type 2 last week. For 8 years I was on 46 and now my hban1 is 49. Officially a diabetic. So where do I go now to try and sort my self out. I have been looking at the bg and my last reading last night after a meal was 5.2. Is that good and what reading should I be aiming for. Please help am so lost.

5.2 is a good reading. Don't stress over that. Your control appears to be good. Keep up with the good behaviour and enjoy your life. Diabetes is not a prison sentence. You can rise above it, but understand it will bring you down if you ignore it. Keep your knowledge updated and manage the condition continously. The forum will assist in anyway possible. Do not lose hope.

You are already in the right place to sort yourself out - this forum!

Your last reading after your meal last night is excellent. To me, under 7 is excellent two hours after a meal, although people have different target levels.

These are the NHS guidelines, although many believe they are over generous. (I do)
Type 2
Before meals 4 to 7
at least 90 minutes after a meal under 8.5

Non-diabetic
Before meals 4 to 5.9
at least 90 minutes after meals under 7.8

My personal targets are 4 to 7 at any time.

Can you tell us what sort of foods you are eating, and if you are testing before you eat as well as after?

What was your doctor doing got the last 8 years to try to stop you progressing? Nothing?

My main diet was curry and rice. Now I have changed to brown rice and also stopped drinking tea. Now have Apple grapes pears etc. At the moment my diet is all over the place because am fasting for Ramadan. Which is why my bg might be good. Just want to know what to eat and what to avoid once I start eating normal.

Rice is high carb. Fruit also has a lot of carbs, especially grapes and bananas. See https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/fruits

Read " reversing your diabetes" explains alot and reduce your carb intake.

Yes, the fasting will be affecting your levels to a certain extent. Lots of people on this forum fast as part of their blood sugar control strategy.

I'm afraid your rice (brown or otherwise) won't be doing you any favours. Along with bread (any colour), pasta, potatoes, flour and breakfast cereals as they are the main culprits in raising blood sugar levels. All carbohydrate converts to glucose once inside the system, and for diabetics this is not good - we need less glucose, not more. Fruit is also difficult, especially grapes, bananas, dates and other dried fruits. Fruit contains a lot of sugar, which may be a natural sugar but nonetheless still sugar. Berries are the best choice, eaten with cream or yogurt as part of a meal rather than as a snack.

Have a look at this site for information on which foods are good and which are not.

I note you have a meter, so perhaps use it to formulate a diet that suits you and doesn't raise your levels too much. Test before you eat and 2 hours after first bite to see exactly what is happening to your levels and how your body is reacting. It may be worth waiting until after Ramadan before doing this.

Meanwhile I'l tag @daisy1 to post the excellent information given to newcomers, and I wish you luck.

It's not up to the doctor. You have the control to either make your condition better or worse.
The doc will give you pills etc but it is the life changes you have to make that will give you the results in my opinion.

True but too many doctors seem to ignore the problem. In the end, it will be down to the individual to take responsibility.
