Can anybody point me in the right direction for sugar free soft drinks? Newly diagnosed with Diabetes and dont see the nurse at diabetic clinic for 3 weeks, Fasting level 9 - 12 and 2 hours after food 15.4 - 16.3. Before being diagnosed I put the excessive thirst down to my medication Amitriptyline and can drink upto 2 pints of fluid overnight.

Water. Sugar free drinks are only dirt and bad for everyone. Diabetic or not

Hi
New to this and really just waiting for my final diagnosis.
DR seems to think diet coke should be OK so I have that along with bottled flavoured water where no sugar is present or has been added

Have to think Bazzza is right on this one. Might be OK in strict moderation, but water would be my first choice.

The coke zero. Pepsi max. Diet ones are ok. Squash that says no added sugar should be ok. If it's not a diet fizzy don't have it. Same for mixers with alcohol.

Sainsburys diet coke and lemonade have zero calories zero sugar and zero carbs. However do your research on the types of artificial sweeteners you want or don't want inside you. Some of them are associated with potential long term problems.

Good luck

The reason people here don't go for the suger free fizzy drinks is really because of the artificial sweeteners used. Some are perceived to be bad for you

Thanks everyone.
What about fruits now? Apples, oranges and bananas are better than grapes and strawberries..............??
Any really good ones to start getting used to!?

No. Berries are ok Including strawberries in moderation. Fruits are not good because they contain fructose, this is suger and bananas are probably the worst for your blood glucose. Tropical fruit is generally higher than other types such as Apple. It's not that you can't have fruit but you need to be careful. Testing with a meter becomes invaluable here as we all react differently.

Try blueberries, blackcurrants. Also check out fruit glycemic index.

The diet drinks like Diet Coke are fine if that's what you like, the No Added Sugar range of squash drinks are good too, I particularly like the Robinson's Orange & Mango flavour drink, you can tell when they are No Added Sugar as the screw tops are blue.

Thanks for the advice peeps, looks like im gonna have to try bottled water (flavoured), I just can seem to drink plain water, Is tea ok with one sweetener and a dash of semi skimmed milk? Bananas are my favourite booh hoo, looks like im gonna have to find a different one now.

Hiya. Yes, I mourned the loss of sweeter fruit and also my favourite sweet tea for a while but now I'm interested in other stuff, as above, like anything ending in --berry, with double cream! I drink water, coffee and fruit tea. I never got used to tea without sweetener so I just gave it up. Persevere with water -- it's the stuff of life, basically. After all I'm 99% cucumber or something (scientific fact).
Pink grapefruit, I believe, has a special quality but I can't remember what. Obviously it's not an aid to memory.

Hi all. I think m&s diet coke uses no artificial sweetener. It tastes a bit odd at first but u get used to it :)

Be careful with flavoured bottle waters, some are not as we think! For instant the volvic one has about 25g of sugar in it! I drink most diet drinks and use the Robinsons water flavourer, I only drink them with my meals, sparkling water is nice with a squeeze of lemon or lime with a sprig of crushed mint

Hi all i need to know what type of food i heve eat in type 1 diabetes... fruits are good ?

Once you start drinking water you end up liking it. Sweetners are not great really. And coke zero puts my readings up too

Hi Alliebee, how much do you think your sugars go up if you have coke zero? I have not drunk these for many many years until the past few months as I felt they helped me but I have thought that they have put my sugars up. However, I seem to remember I put that question on here and everyone said no they would not put sugars up - you and I know different then. I am drinking Diet Coke.

I was drinking coke zero in the hospital and once I stopped I noticed my bs start to drop and stabilize. I dont drink any diet drinks now. Used to drink up to 22 liters of Pepsi Max a week when I was at my worst.

I drink diet pepsi am hoping thats ok to drink?
