Chris. Feeling a little lost I am 66. 12 Stone and fit. Blood sugar down from 7 to5.5 really struggling to stop my weight plummeting. Any one out there who is in a similar position. Everywhere I look it is all about loosing weight. I don't smoke or drink alcohol so am otherwise healthy.

When I started to cut the carbs down, my weight also dropped, eventually finding its own new equilibrium. I now control any gain by fasting and any loss by eating more fat.
I either snack on cheese, or nuts, particularly almonds. Of course we are all different, but hope that can be helpful to you

I never had that problem myself, but I believe @bluetit may be able to assist.

Dr Bernstein normally advises people increase their protein intake - nuts and/or cheese fit that bill perfectly. Also, snacking is probably not a bad thing for people wanting to gain weight; though usually the worst thing for people trying to lose.

You could have a hyperactive thyroid which causes unplanned/inexplicable weight loss. I lost a stone last year and fell to around 7 stones. I lost muscle tone on my arms, buttocks and thighs. Thankfully with treatment ie medication I was back quickly to 8 stones.

I suggest you ask your doctor for blood tests.

Hi,

I see you are on Metformin and your blood sugars are down to 5.5. Metformin does very little to reduce blood sugars. It mainly helps overweight people most because it is an appetite suppressant. It MAY help you maintain a healthy weight if you discuss with your nurse about coming off it. That is your call. I'm not a doctor.

I lost all my weight by following a low carb higher fat diet. There then came a point when I just kept on losing despite not really needing to. I increased my fats/protein by adding an extra egg each day, and introduced cheese to my diet for the first time. I have never snacked and hate nuts. Just 3 meals a day. It took quite a while to stop losing but once I found the right balance between very low carb and high fat I stopped losing and have now maintained for 2 years. Basically it means increasing your calories from fat/protein bit by bit until you find that balance without increasing your carbs. I use the term fat/protein because the extra fats I added also contain a lot of protein. There are other fats you could add without much extra protein if that is your preference.

Hi @Genetic Diabetic! 12 stone doesn't sound unduly underweight unless you are quite tall. What are your BMI and waist/height ratio like?
Usually weigh loss seems to stabilise at a 'normal' figure. Mine seems to have stabilised at around 10 stone though I would have liked to have lost a bit more. How much are you losing weekly/monthly?

12 stone seems ok for a 6 footer, but I can see where you are coming from. At 66 it is safest to be a tad overweight not underweight.
Sometimes we lose weight for reasons unconnected with our diet. You sound anxious about your weight loss. There may be something else going on. I speak from experience.
Check your actual calorie intake. Low carb diets make your body work better but they can normally only make your weight fall if they are causing you to eat fewer calories than your body needs to maintain itself. So if your low carb diet is also providing adequate calories you need to Go see your doctor.
