I am a 43 male with diabetes in my family. I have recently lost about 2 stone in 4 weeks without trying. I am tired constantly and in the past day my ankles/feet have swollen and I have an itchy rah down the back of my shins, the skin is now hard, red and warm. I have a gp appointment next wek to get some blood tests and I have just had a clear chest X-ray. I really do think diabetes may be diagnosed but I wonder if anybody can give some guidance here. I was thinking of attending a&e because I am struggling walking without pain in my legs.

If you think you should go to a and e then yiu should really go. Could be anything, but mention the symptoms you have.in your post and they will give you the once over.

Lots of pharmacies will do a finger prick blood sugar test.

Yes, do at least have a finger-prick test done and it's worth getting hold of a meter. I would see the GP as well and report the weight loss and family history. At 43 and having lost a lot of weight unexpectedly could point to late onset T1 diabetes. I don't want to scare you but be aware of the possibility as you have db in the family.
