Some sad news

Hi There

You may be aware that I posted on the forum a few weeks back problems that my wife was having with eating and also her medication. Here are the links in case you had not read them.

It is sad to say that my wife died a couple of weeks back and I have to admit that I am still in shock about this.

She died of Congestive Cardiac Failure (heart failure) and Myocardial Infarction (heart attack)

Can you give me any information as to why my wife going into hospital with not eating could lead to her ending up with heart failure and a heart attack.

She had heart failure just over 4 years ago and nobody have ever told me that with her being diabetic that this could lead to her having problems with her heart. I have sent a letter to the hospital involved and waiting for some answers as to the reasons that something like this happened to my wife.

I am very sorry to hear about the sad loss of your dear wife. I remember your posts at the time and hoped things had improved for her.I hope someone will give you some answers soon so you can try and make some sense of this tragedy.I didn't know your wife but please accept my condolences at this difficult time.

You need to ask the Hospital about your concerns Hal and I hope they can provide you with the answers so that you can come to terms with this.

Hal, I'm really sorry to hear about your wife. I remember reading your posts and really hoped that things had improved. I'm no medical expert but it could be that your wife's conditions were suppressing her appetite or leaving her unable to eat. As others have said, only the hospital will be able to provide answers to your questions.

I know it's hard, but remember all the wonderful times that you had with your wife and all the years you shared. She's really lucky to have such a supportive his and and I am sure she really appreciated you looking out for her in the way that you did.

My thoughts are with you and the rest of your family at this difficult time.

Firstly my condolences. Having lost one of my parents recently I can only imagine your grief.

Your question regarding the hospital issue is a little more difficult to answer and I would not propose to presume what the medical profession will explain, however ...

Any eating disorder will place a strain on the body and the reserves that the body has to call upon. Blood sugar (as we all know) needs to be monitored carefully and kept within specific tolerances as does a host of electrochemical systems that we all take for granted. Anything - even as insignificant as a sneeze - places a strain on the system and in a weakened state this can introduce complications throughout the body. Now if you have a weakened major organ such as the heart, any stress caused to the system will add stress to the heart in one form or another. We all know that adrenaline can give rise to increased heart speed and dizziness if it is not burnt off by action, and any kind of 'panic' could have caused such a reaction. If the heart was not up to the job, then it will fail and could lead to death. Diabetics have an increased likelihood of complications as our blood chemistry is basically being damaged for reasons that the profession is still unclear about. This causes many side effects that also lead to organ failure and loss of life.

I think that the hospital should offer some kind of explanation as there are so many factors that I could not comment upon. The only topic that will keep coming back is "Could you have done anything to prevent it?" the answer to which is "No." Whilst there will be days of doubt and self recrimination, which is human nature; I am very pragmatic when it comes to time. We all have an allotted amount and we have no idea when the clock is due to stop - for whatever reason.

Stay positive, don't give up and celebrate the life you had together.

I do ask the question "What if"

I have been doing this since the day she died. She did seem well, apart from not eating, feeling dizzy at times and not very strong on her feet but she had the ability to walk round the house. Had to use a wheelchair when she was out but that was the same for the last 4 years or so.

The problems all seemed to come on when she was in hospital which is why I want the hospital to answer the very important questions that I had for them, it was a 3 page letter detailing what had happened on the day that she went in and what had happened through her last 6 days.

I do often ask myself "What if" I did not take her in, would she still be here now or would it still have happened. She had no signs of heart failure with her ankles, legs and tummy swelling up the way that it had whe she was taken in 4 years before. Her breathing problems only really started on the Thursday and she did not even look swollen up then, in fact, there did not seem to be fluid on her tummy on the Monday afternoon that she died.

It is not easy at the moment but no matter how long it takes I will get to the bottom of this.
