Cases like this, and many others I have read about recently, worry me very much. The attitude of the paramedics was appalling. I have sympathy for the family but can't understand if the child had lost so much weight and was obviously ill why he had not seen a doctor after being sent home from school three days before. There has been a lot of campaigning for awareness of symptoms for meningitis and think perhaps there should be something similar for type 1 diabetes as there are so many children and young adults coming down with this. If the parents knew that losing a lot of weight suddenly could be a warning sign of diabetes they may have taken the child to the doctor and asked about the possibility before kidney damage had occurred.

Although nowhere near as serious, I had a similar problem when my brother tried to get an ambulance for me having discovered me crying on the bathroom floor in agony. They asked for the symptoms, which were agonizing pain vomiting fainting and blood in urine. The person on the phone told my brother to ring for a taxi  , I managed to grab the phone and in a half concious state shout some choice phrases down the phone including sueing them, and they eventually despatched an ambulance. The paramedics couldnt believe they wouldnt despatch them and i ended up in hospital for a week with an enlarged kidney and stuck stone that had to be surgically removed....
