Type of diabetes
Type 2
Treatment type
Tablets (oral)
I was diagnosed type 2 end of May and started on Metformin 2000mg. Other than a few toilet troubles early on, which have settled, I have tolerated them pretty well. I bought my only monitor as was not given one. At around 2pm everyday I get so unbelievable tired, like there is literally nothing in the tank and I just want to sleep. This is then me done for the rest of the day. This is obviously around 2 hours after my lunch and my glucose readings are generally between 7 and 8 at this point. I do have hypothyroidism aswel, so not sure if this is playing a part in it. Does anybody else experience this? Is there anything I can do to get more energy? Don't know what I am looking for exactly, fed up with the constant feeling ill and worrying about food.

Your blood sugars are still a smidge too high, I'm not surprised you're tired all the time. I was knackered before being diagnosed with diabetes, and I kept thinking it was just my thyroid acting up, so I can see how you'd lay blame there.... But for now, focus on the blood sugars, as those are still verified to be up a bit. https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html might help a little with the food. That should get your blood sugars down to a point where you don't feel like a trampled pancake anymore.

It won't always be like this, I promise. It gets better.

Thanks, I am really struggling with the diet side of things. Although I am not a big sweet eater, my diet consists mainly of potatoes, rice, pasta and bread. I have made switches to wholegrain/wholewheat and drastically cut down on portion sizes, but realise this may not be enough. Just struggle as I don't eat fish and am not a big meat eater, so find everything is very repetitive. Also find it hard for things to eat that are quick. Had quite a bit of a melt down in thinking I have the rest of my life where I either eat what I want and feel rotten and suffer complications, or be miserable and heavily restricted on food.

Wholewheat/wholegrain is still carby... If you can find alternatives for what you usually eat? Cauliflower rice maybe, though that might affect your thyroid. Eggs, cheeses, above ground veg... If it's easy you want, there are low carb wraps out there. I just put some canned salmon, mayo, dill and lettuce on mine and boom, that was lunch. Just fill it with whatever seems nice, really. Quick for me would be full fat yog, purition powder, some nuts and coconut shavings. (Or a few strawberries, a bit of cocao powder, whatever).

Think about what things you like, then figure out whether there are low carb alternatives. Because honestly... If you hate what you're eating, and overthinking it to a point where just the thought of food makes you miserable, you're not going to be tackling diabetes through diet for very long. This has to be sustainable, so find out what works for you, not for the average low carb guru. And hey... Not everyone can do the diet thing exclusively, they have meds alongside... You're not "doomed" yet, you know. ;) Don't give up, keep looking for what works for you.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, the link you sent was very helpful. Feeling a little bit better and will try not to get overwhelmed with it all. Such a life changing diagnosis, I never realised.

It is a life changing diagnosis, and as you get a good grip of it, you will realise it's a change very much for the better. Yes you'll have stumbles along the way, and doubts, but we are all here to help out as and when needed. Pretty soon you'll realise that you know probably a lot more than your health care professionals do, and will be advising newcomers on here as well. The main point is that now you are at a point in time, where you can take control of YOUR health.
