Hi all,

Type 1 for over five years.....

I wonder if anybody feels the same????

Recently I've had a couple of weeks off work. For various reasons, I've been extremely physically active, so much so that I've only taken around 10 units of Novorapid per day and 25 units of Levemir at night. I have felt great - so much energy and no desire to crawl into bed or lie down somewhere at various points throughout the day (mostly afternoons) and have a nap!

Contrast this with when I'm back at work. These days I'm not that physically active (though I keep fit through walking, etc). I usually have to take around 60 units of Levemir (split 30U day/night) and around 45 units of Novorapid altogether, throughout the day. On such days, I seem to be so tired - you know, a serious lack of energy wherein I literally have to get into bed. Fortunately I work from 6pm-1am so I can afford to nap throughout the day! Having said that, I really don't want to. At that, I usually get a decent night's sleep after work - around 7 hours, so its not sleep deprivation causing this lack of energy.

Clearly, from my experience, the less insulin I take, and the more active I am, the better I feel. I have a good diet - fish, meat, etc, etc, and I touch carbs very rarely. So is it the insulin which is causing this dreadful lethargy?? Its not always possible to keep so physically active and therefore reduce insulin intake, else I would. On the days I can't, I have to up the dosage, then get stuck in this annoying cycle.

Any advice/similar experiences.

Lethargy can be cause d by so many varying factors, and not even sure where in sulin fits in to this.

Lethargy can be experienced just because you are sat down and inactive, from the heat in a room, most people experience some slow down after they have had their lunch, even bordom from doing the same routine things, not stimulating the brain, and stimulating the muscles in your body....just like the normal larger muscles in our bodies, the brain also needs to be used and flexed to stave off lethargy. Looking at computer screens etc, there are many, many things that could be making you feel like this at work, not just diabetes/insulin

Could be that there may be something medical...but then I belive you would be feeling lethargic ALL the time.

The reduced insulin comes as no surprise as you have been very active over the last few weeks but I must admit I am gobsmacked by the amount you have reduced it by, stress can cause bg to rise and if you are constantly stressed in your work this could be the reason why you feel tired, lethargic and need so much insulin , either way have a chat with your gp about this just to be sure.
