Welcome to the forum Andy. Don't ever feel a question is silly, it's by asking questions we all learn. No question is ever silly, as it's something important to the person asking.
The finger prick test we all do ourselves, is a measure of what's happening at the time we take it, so we have an idea of what foods/exercise etc do to us. The HbA1c as Fraddy has said, is done at your surgery and is believed to be much more accurate. Most of us look forward to the HbA1c as it shows if what we have been doing the last three months is working.
