Fergus McStillnaw, an anti-Scottish independence voter who expected a vote for Brexit to help his job prospects...is doing a project for his basic adult science class at college; students have to study an insect for a day and then briefly discuss their findings in front of the class.

Fergus is at the back of the class with a spider. At the end of the day, it's his turn to present his project.

Fergus says "I placed Simon the Spider about two feet away from me and said - come here, Simon - and to my amazement, he made a slight move towards me before stopping. I then took a razor blade and cut Simon's legs off. Again, I called him forward...but this time, he didn't move at all."

The lecturer says with a shocked tone to his voice and a puzzled look on his face, "You cut its legs off? Jesus, Fergus! What conclusion did you reach from this?"

Fergus replied "Well, obviously, if you remove a spider's legs...it goes deaf!"

[note - sorry if you expected Fergus naive political views to be directly relevant to the story beyond serving as a replacement for the usual "stupid Irishman" stereotype. My ancestors were Irish...and I can no longer bring myself to contribute to the myth that the Irish are stupid]. By the way, I am in favour of independence for Scotland...in case you are Irish..and were wondering

Hey @pleinster . Just awarded you a winner rating.
The joke is awful BUT you succeeded in taking me back maybe 40 yrs.
As soon as I started to read the " joke " I recalled my mother telling me the very same tale whilst she was doing the ironing in the living room of my childhood home. It bought back a lot of memories all in a flash, memories I thought I'd forgotten.
That's why you got your rating.
Thanks.

Nice...I shall satisfy myself with being amusing by default. I think I first hear the Irish version of it about 45 years ago...from my Irish grandmother!
