hi

I am type 2 and have been for the past 2 years, when I went to the hospital for tests they made me drink 5 glasses of lucozade
and then tested me 2 hours later, now that is what I have been doing but this morning I tested after 1 hour after a meal and it was 10.5, I then sat for a further hour and tested and it was at 2 hours for 5.2.

Is this spike bad, should I test after 1 hour or 2 hour, its confusing me now.

best regards

Spikes are a normal part of life for diabetics and non-diabetics included.

Considering the fact you drank something that has one of the highest sugar contents on the market, I wouldn't say it's bad at all. The important thing is that your BGL returned to the normal range in the right time.

The guidelines suggest 'at least 90 minutes post prandial', but the majority of us work off two hours. Have a look at this link:

hi

Thanks for the reply but it was the hospital that did the test my meal consisted of cereal and a piece of toast, I will look at the thread.

I'm sorry to have to tell you this carpy, but a lot of us on here have had to give up cereal and toast, at least if it's made from normal bread. Carbs do tend to turn to sugar in the blood stream. You can try to slow down the sugar release by eating certain other things with your carbs, but it's a tricky balancing act.

Hornplayer is spot on... most of us have to knock cereal and bread on the head, but feel so much better for it:)

If I had cereal and a piece of toast I too would expect readings like yours. That's a total carbohydrate meal.

hi

well I thought I had found a cereal I could eat, Albran it has a low GI and the bread was that livlife stuff 3.5 grams of carbs per slice. If not them could someone give me any hints on what everyone else is doing for breckfast I know egg bacon and sausage is ok but I cant eat that every day. This morning after allbran and a slice of livlife toast,,an hour later my BG was 10.5 and after 2 hours it was 5.2 does the reading after an hour matter or is the 2 hour one more important.

regards

To be honest All-Bran has 19gm of carbs per 40gm serving the bread being low carb should have been OK .

I serve up food buffet style and sometimes there are chops, bits of meat or whatever left over and put in the freezer so although I eat the eggs and sausages etc. I also get a bit of variety from the roast lamb, steak, pork chop etc. It's so tough having to eat all that, especially the roast lamb.

No problem:)

Yes I read that as the hospital requesting you drink the lucozade. They favour anything with a high carbohydrate content, so it's typically something fizzy or fruit juice. Almost like a stress test for your pancreas!

Those spikes are what we try to avoid. We try to keep things as flat as possible.

Breakfast doesn't have to be typical breakfast food. I tend to keep my BF the same as if I mess up BF the whole day is messed. I either eat guacamole and celery or a piece of turkey on a lettuce wrap. These two meals keep me as flat as I can be in the morning

I used to eat salad for BF but I have that for lunch or dinner these days. Anything you put on bread you can out I a big piece of lettuce

Your pre and post meal levels are great, but I personally prefer to keep any 1 hour spikes as low as I can manage. But I'll only test then if it's something that I want to check to see what my reaction to it is, so I may do this for example if I eat more fruit than I would normally.

Most of us will test at 2 hours, but as i said, sometimes it's useful to test at one hour or even later too, e.g. at 3 hours, usually depending on what type of food you're eating. But don't be too worried about doing any extra tests until you have unexpected results or have other specific reasons to do so.
