Hello Me Again,

Spikes and Diabetics and Non Diabetics.

In diabetic terms what is a spike, is it any level about 7.8mmol plus??

Also spikes are not good for us diabetics, so when a NON diabetic spikes, how long does his/her spike last??

How long does a spike last from a Diabetic / NON diabetic??

If it you find from a test that you are in a spike range (7.8% plus) how long should you wait to test again to see if you have come down??

Also dont we all spike diabetics and non diabetics??

For example I have just had a meal with 15grams of carb in it..
Before meal I was 5.8 mmol
1 hours later is am 7.1 mmol.

Not done 2 hour test yet, BUT surely I must have spiked???

Sorry i am a touch confused about spikes.

Cheers

the word "Spike" in this context, just describes the shape of the graph you would get if you plotted continuously measured blood glucose.
Spikes do occur in non-diabetics, but they are probably less pronnounced and eliminated quickly.
A little bit of info that many people haven't come across is that non-diabetics with slightly elevated HbA1c are prone to the same health issues as diabetics, eg cardiovascular problems.
It's now thought that a glucose level of above 7.7mmol is what does damage. If spikes are happening, above that level and especially if it takes a while to get them down, damage will happen somewhere. Unfortunately, it often doesn't show up in HbA1c tests
I like to make sure I stay below 6, even after meals, to protect myself as much as possible
