Insulin
I've been reading these posts with interest.

I was diagnosed type 2 in 2001 and have gradually progressed onto insulin. I too have put on about half a stone since starting the insulin.

I've spoken to the DSN about this and she hasn't been able to advise how to lose it really - just given fairly general healthy diet advice. She did say though that the reason I've put weight on is because all those calories would have been wee'ed away when sugars were high.

I think you're doing a fabulous job. What you've been through must have been very unsettling and you're doing an amazing job - be kind to yourself. Look how far you have come already. :D

but i've put on 7 pounds ... and it's only been a week
I wouldn't worry about that too much; on diagnosis with DKA, patients have a fluid deficit of up to 100ml / kg, so the weight gain will largely be water.

Hi, letteyec. I hesitated to say anything as you're getting lots of great advice from the previous posters, however, I was DKA on arrival at hospital and it was taken very seriously indeed. I was put on a drip to rehydrate me so what you were being urged to do ie go to A&E was sound advice.
All that's happened since is quite disillusioning and you're doing just fine now that BGs are coming down to better levels. You are probably not much in the mood for reading but there's a are book - not expensive from Amazon - that explains things very well. You swon't regret consulting it as it deals with balancing the ong-term insulin (basal) with the short (bolus), also carb counting. Lots of other excellent advice too regarding coping with exercise, insulin adjustments etc etc. Don't be put off by the title, it's "Think like a Pancreas" by Gary Scheiner. Other good books there are, too, but this one reads fairly easily. Bonne chance qrp

Hey all,

Hyena thanks for that link, had a look at it and looks very helpful, have not been through it all yet but will deffo when i'm home from my holiday. i'm from bournemouth too!

Qrp, I have been so lucky finding this Forum as everyone has been so so helpful and i'd hate to think how i'd be having not found it! As for you mentioning the book think like a pancreas, it's funny because I put it on order at my local book shop just a few days ago - but they say it isnt out until January 2012, so I think it is a newer released version, i'll just hang on to get that. I did buy Dr Bernsteins? book about Diabetes and it has been invaluable too.

I've been including more carbs in my diet, had an apple yesterday!! and a bread roll with my salad... feels so naughty!

Jay, I also spoke to my nurse about why i was putting on weight fast, and she told me I must be eating too bigger portion sizes... well I was eating like small salads with meats and deffo know it was not that...

About my weight, I put on 7lbs since diagnosed in a week, i've been naughty and have been weighing everyday.. yesterday I appeared to lose 6lbs and today i've appeared to lose a further 2lbs... so I've no idea whats going on there... probably the weighing scales are faulty! or maybe my body just needed to get used to it? I don't know but im happy with my loss, if it even is a loss...

Hello again, letteyc. You,ve been quick off the mark, I see! It pays to be proactive with your own diabetes care as the knowledge of the healthcare professionals can be very patchy: also, it's a tricky condition to 'tame'. Bernstein lays it all out emphatically but many seem to find his diet very hard to follow when leading today;s normal life. Ok if you're at home and in charge of the cusine.
I checked on Scheiner and it's the Second Edition that's coming out soon. Amazon said it's due out on Novemeber 17th, if you wanted to get it sooner than your local bookshop can. BTW, Amazon have secondhand copies of the first edition for £5-ish. best wishes qrp
