First topic here, I'm quite an active person when it come to physical fitness and i cant seem to find a topic about what sports or physical activities other diabetics do on here. If there is one i apologize in advance! Just thought people could talk about their sports, how long they've been doing them and any achievements their particularly proud of however big or small?

With me its Rugby, Snowboarding, Kayaking, Skiing, dead weight lifting and finally running in that order. My biggest achievement so far would be beating Welshpool youth rugby team this season. My team have been very unlucky and been put in the hardest division of the North Wales Youth League when its our first year entering. We haven't won much...and when we saw Welshpool getting off their bus, it didnt look like the season was going to get any better. But we kicked off and gave it 100%, and we won a very close 18-16. It felt great to win as part of a team, with my best mates after all the hard work we had put in. Well thats me, anyone else?

I do home based exercise based on a huge range of video tapes and my living room looks like a gym. I am an utter sissy compared to you! (But then again I'm almost 50)

I'd love to be as active as you, but having only just been diagnosed (last June) type 1, I'm struggling. My job's very physical and I struggle to get through the day without having about 3 hypos. I also struggle with the gym. Weight lifting I do OK with, not as well as I used to, but running is a nightmare. I can run about 4k, but have to glug half a bottle of lucozade half way through to get to the end :( I'm only on 4 units of Levimir too. I'm waiting for a call from my nurse to talk about other solutions as we speak.

What system are you on? I'm thinking a pump may be my only option..

I'm working towards doing a 10k run in the summer for Diabetes :) If I can make that, I'd consider that a big achievement for me, which is annoying because I'm plenty fit enough for it.

Hey Clarky.
About your work, do you carry Lucozade tablets around with you in your pocket? If not it would be a good idea to invest. Taking one every time you feel you may need it would help with the hypos.

im on the Basal bolus regime. Im doing 20 levemir in the morning and the same again at night and 10 units of novorapid plus or minus depending on what im eating. I was diagnosed from an early age so i haven't had to change the way i do sports like you have to compensate for your diabetes. I'm sure there's someone else on the forum who is big on sports and was diagnosed later in life that you could talk too.

If you didn't know you should always take sugar before you exercise, around 10-15 minutes if im correct before you do it. My gym time is mostly weight lifting and i just have a Lucozade sport that ill take a sip out of every so often by the side. My rugby actually increases my blood sugar because its such a physical sport, so i dont normally take anything before. But i wouldnt advise that for anyone else if you havent spoken to your doctor first.

With running have you tried taking regular sips out of your lucozade to keep your sugars steady and in turn your performance?

I would never have a pump installed personally because of the active sports i do...rugby especially. I would be to fearful of it being damaged or it damaging me as a result of the physicality of the sport. But for you it might be a good idea.

Its fantastic that your running for diabetes, even though you have to look after yourself more now you mustn't let diabetes hold you back! Hope some of that helped!
