Squirrels must be low carb

We are too far from the coast for herring gulls, but we do get the black headed variety in winter.

We have a dog. She loves the birds and does nothing to upset them. They just ignore her as though she wasn't there.

Allow me to introduce Cedric. He and his partner Celia (I didn't give them those names) were here when we moved here ten years ago and were an established breeding pair then so they must be around 14 years old. You shouldn't really feed gulls but we feed these two (and only these two, not even their offspring) because they are very territorial and keep the others off. They are big birds, and the cats don't know quite what to do with them, and Cedric is just as likely to be the aggressor as one of the cats. So there's a stalemate really, except when the French windows are closed and then they both get a lot braver of course.

Cedric has twice got stuck in our sitting room, the second time just a few days ago, so it's entertaining getting him into a corner and grabbing him - feisty bu$$er he is too. But after all this time they're almost family. Mad or what?

Love the jackdaw pics - in the last one the youngster looks really grumpy!
