Hi,

My partner and I are thinking about starting our own family. I've been in contact with my diabetes team who have offered a bit of advice about where my levels should be. I've haven't got an appointment with them until 1st July which is fine as it will give me a bit of time to refine what I'm already doing. They have also advised that I need to check my levels an hour after eating. Does this mean an hour after I've injected or an hour after I've eaten (as this can sometimes be 10-20 minutes later). I inject just before I eat.

She also told me that I need to eat sensible carb portions. Can anyone tell me what a sensible carb portion is as I just inject according to what I am eating. At the moment I only check my levels if I am driving or at my next meal which is usually 3 hours later. I have a feeling that my levels are going to be quite high an hour after eating and presume the sensible carb portions will help?

Many thanks

When testing 2 hours after eating, I test 2 hours after starting my meal. Others might test 2 hours after finishing eating but I was told 2 hours after starting my meal.

Sorry, I don't know about sensible carb portions, unless they mean eat less carbs, so that your blood sugar doesn't go absolutely sky high for the first hour or so.

Hi I am getting my self ready for pregnancy as well. The pregnancy diabetic nurse said I need aim for 30g of carbs for breakfast 50g for lunch and 60g for tea. I'm nearly there with the tea as I have cut my portion sizes down as they were far to big in the first place. Breakfast I struggle because if I have breakfast I find I'm more hungry than if I just don't eat it. Working on that one. The whole testing after meals I asked the same question and was told it doesn't make much difference so was up to me.

When I was pregant, I tested an hour and two hours after eating. I didn't do this for every single meal, just to spot spikes. I tested an hour, or two hours, after the start of the meal eg if I had my evening meal at 6pm, id test at 7pm and/or 8pm.

Sensible carbs? I don't know what they meant by that. I'd guess a moderate amount of carbs - not too few, not too many. I ate around 180 to 200g of carbs per day when I was pregnant.

Check out the Pregnancy Forum on here. I found it invaluable.

Thank you very much for your help. I'll take it all on board and get cracking!

The annoying thing is that ever since we have decided to start our own family my sugars have decided to go mental. They used to sit for weeks around 5-7 and now I'm lucky if a reading is under 10. So frustrating!
