starting insulin on Type 2

Maybe someone else has been in this position, I have just started insulin after a couple of years of chaotic mis management. I am taking a long acting insulin, one injection a day. After 10 days the BSLd are lower but still not under the magic 8mmol first thing. I am needing to increase the dose by 2 units a day until I reach it.
Is there any general rule about how long it might take to kick in? A couple of times its been under 9 then bounced back up to 10 and 11. I need to see the Dr on Monday in any case but also interested if anyone has any personal experiences. Probably I was rather naive in thinking it would all just be easily fixed!

Trial and error. You want to take 2-3 days on a dose before you change it. I did see on one of the manufacturers sites good advice about how much to change depending on your BS. There is no hurray. Illness, exercise and activites will affect things obviously. I started on lantus which was fine. But wanted a twice day regime and chose levemir as it seems to induce less weight gain.

thanks guys. Yes its levemir that I am using at the moment, so hopefully it will sort itself out soon. I've been doing a really good exercise regime so maybe its going better than it would have done otherwise.

Marty, may I ask what you've found the benefits of a 2x a day regime to be? I also read it on the manufacturer's site (for levemir) that it "should" be used 2x a day. On one hand I'd be happy with only one injection if possible, but on the other, the larger the dose the harder it seems to be to inject it comfortably and without bruising. Sorry if that is wingeing to people who have to do multiple shots though. Presumably it also controls the BSLs better over the whole day?

The morning dose is too counteract the natural late morning insulin resistance due to natural cortisol steroid effects. I take about a third of dose in the morning. However, as I am not well the doses are changing at the moment.
