Starting Metformin

Hi all

Been treating my Type 2 diabetes with diet changes for the last 9 months, but for some reason have gone from 44 to 50 Hba1c reading last week. My GP has prescribed Metformin (500mg per day, rising to 1500mg per day over 3 weeks) - anybody got any advice re side effects? Im also taking tablets for blood pressure and statins...

Hi Robin. Can you give us examples of what you’ve been eating? Tell us what you ate yesterday for example. Metformin is a very mild drug and doesn’t help that much, diet is the key. We may be able to help you tweak your diet a bit.
 
I have heard many people say that Metformin makes a fine laxative but if you get the slow release kind it helps. The side effect I got was Taste Disturbance. This made food, particularly vegetables, taste like burnt plastic. I had to stop taking them. Not everyone gets an adverse side effect so I wish you luck with it.
